Tip & How-To about Mitsubishi WS-55809 55" Rear Projection Television

Mitsubishi won't turn on and has flashing power/timer light.

All Mitsubishi WS-XXXXX model projection TVs have defective capacitors on two different boards which will fail after about 5 or 6 years. Getting parts is the difficult problem.

The two boards are the power supply board and the DM board. Mitsubishi is aware of the problem and sometimes can be talked into offering money to help fix or purchase a new unit. I have direct evidence of customers getting $500.00 towards a new unit to settle the issue. Of course this requires an agressive posture. But let's face it, they made the defective units, they sold them, they refused to admit that they made a mistake, so why shouldn't they pay?

This model has a documented problem of electrolytic capacitor failures on the DM board and power supply board. There are no replacement boards available but there is a repair kit for each board available at http://www.tvrepairworld.com/mitsubishi_repair_kits which has the usual parts that go bad and generally will repair the unit. The cost is $36.00 US per board. It is not an easy repair but tvrepairworld has very good installation instructions as well as videos you can watch on their web site.
TV Repair World has just added a new repair kit which has the parts for both the DM and power boards for $61.00 and shipping. For my money that is the kit to get. The kits come with excellent instructions and pictures as well as online help.

Mitsubishi WS-48311 projection model. It started turning off for no reason and I would turn it back on while watching a program. Then it went off and will on come back on. Then you press the power button the green light comes on for a second then goes off. There is no action on the screen at all.

gtl545,

This model has a known defect. The power supply board and DM boards have failed electrolytic capacitors. No spares are available from the factory. Fortunately there are after market repair kits available. I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r7065906-mitsubishi_turn_flashing_power_timer which explains the problem as well as where to get parts.

TURN TV ON IT TURNS OFF I CAN HEAR THE RELAY

You are not the only one I can tell you that. I had a similar problem with my Phillips 42 in. LCD HD TV.

Here's the problem. The Power Supply Board. I opened my TV up(warranty was up of course) and found several bad capacitors. Phillips and several other companies were sold capacitors that although were highly rated failed within 5 years because of a lack of preservatives. All sorts of electronic equipment is now being effected due to these defective capacitors.
Solutions?
1. Take it in and have it fixed
2. Open it up, check the board for faulty capacitors(bulged or leaking) Buy a new Power supply board and install it.
3. Remove PSB, remove faulty capacitors and replace with compatible new ones.

Hope this helps
