Tip on keeping the perfume fresh

Speaking of heat, if you want to keep that favorite perfume as fresh as the day you bought it, keep the bottle in a cool, dark place. Keep the bottle in it's original box, if possible. You may even want to keep it in the fridge, so you can have a refreshingly cool spritz of your perfume before heading out for the day!

This is a common issue with spray types of perfume and cologne. It is very easy for the head to break.

The best thing you can do is to try and find another spray bottle of some sort and use its spraying device in place of the existing one. If that isn't an option, you could always exchange it for a new one if it is mostly unused. Most retail stores will replace it, just tell them it came like that.

If all else fails you always have the option of permanently removing the spraying device, turning your bottle into a pour style of perfume bottle. Then just wrap some plastic over the top to keep it sealed.

I hope this helps!

what is the shelf life of opened and unopened perfume and how can you tell if you are buying "old" or "outdated" perfume? the lady at the dept. store says that they "rotate" their stock and that the old stuff is what you get at the discount places...and that exposure to heat, air, and time changes the scent! with the cost of fragrances going for $65 to $150+, i would like to not get ripped off! please help!

Hi there,

According to this website:

Perfume has a shelf-life of 3-5 years.

If the box is opened then the perfume will be more exposed to sunlight which can speed up evaporation from the bottle and could cause changes to the color and scent.

Keeping your perfume in a cool dark place will help it to preserve its color and scent.

I agree with the dept store lady that exposure to heat and light will cause damage to the perfume but if it comes in a box that has not been opened then the damage should be minimal, especially if it's a popular scent that doesn't stay on the shelf for long.

Best wishes,

How can I keep my fragrance from going bad?

Keep all fragrance in a cool, dry area, and away from windows as sunlight can unbalance the various ingredients. An opened bottle should be kept in its box to insure a longer shelf life.

How long can I keep my perfume before it “turns”?

Some industry experts say that perfume should be replaced every year, but properly stored, perfumes should last much longer. Most perfumes will keep several years, some will keep many more years than that.

To store perfume properly, keep it away from heat and light. A dark closet or a covered box is best. Also avoid direct exposure to air. Splash bottles, which expose the fragrance to air every time they are opened, are problematic. Consider decanting into a smaller atomizer for regular use. If you apply perfume directly from a bottle stopper, wipe the stopper with a clean, lint free cloth before replacing it in the bottle.
