Tip & How-To about Health & Beauty

Changing fragrance acocrding to the season

I suggest changing your fragrance depending upon the season. In other words, go for lighter scents during the hotter weather and keep the stronger scents for the drier, cool weather. Heat intensifies the scent, so there is no need to douse yourself in a heavy scent during the summer. And if you are outdoors, be aware that bees, wasps, hornets, and other flying bugs are attracted to flowery fragrances (which is another good reason to stick to light, clean scents!)

What type of fragrance lasts the longest when sprayed? For example: toilette, parfum, body spray (like at Bath& Body Works)... etc. Also, any advice on how to keep the fragrance from "fading" so that the scent lasts the whole day?

The concentrate always last longer....oil-based fragrances are also long lasting..this is evident with "attar", which is arabic perfume oil....very snice smelling...although tooo much of it can get to your head....about the scent lasting the whole day...i believe its not possible...although some fragrances last longer on some skin types...your best bet is to keep trying the ones you like and see which lasts longer....or you can re-sprray during the day....lighter scents for the day time and sweet scents for the night time....

How many fragrances can be tried without becoming numbed?

variety of different fragrance types is less fatiguing to the sense of smell. When perfumes are very different you can try five to six; when they are similar, only two to three. Heavier scents tire your nose more quickly so when sampling always begin with lighter scents.

Is it important to change fragrances according to the different seasons of the year?

Yes, since heat increases the intensity of a fragrance. There are certain fragrances that are more appropriate for summer and other stronger scents that would be better for winter use. A good guideline to follow is to wear lighter scents in the summer and stronger in the winter. Citrus scents are perfect for summer while orientals are better for winter.

What are top, middle, and base notes?

Top notes provide the first scent impression of a fragrance once it has been applied to the skin. They are usually lighter, more volatile aromas that evaporate readily. Their scent usually lingers for between 5 and 30 minutes. Middle notes, sometimes referred to as "heart notes", make up the body of the blend. They may be evident from the start, but will usually take 10-30 minutes to fully develop on the skin. They are the notes that classify the fragrance family (floral, oriental, chypre, etc, see below). Base Notes are those with the greatest molecular weight. They last the longest, and are also important as fixatives, that is, they help slow down the evaporation rates of the lighter notes, giving the fragrance holding power. Common base notes include oakmoss, patchouli, woods, musk and vanilla.

A fragrance which does not have traditional top, middle and base notes is usually described as "linear".
