Tip & How-To about Televison & Video

Direct TV states "Not available" on screen.

When your Direct TV based units say that a channel is "not available" when you know that you had been receiving them on a regular basis you probably have a problem with the activation card. Sometimes the unit will lose it's communication with the satelite and it will not restore it when the signal reappears. This is probably a software issue but happens so rarely no one wants to fix it.

If all the other menus and parameters of the system appear to be working the problem probably lies with the activation card. For many reasons the card can become unusable and cause the system to not work. Generally though it is caused by a glitch in the software. As the unit continually reacquires the satelite or satelites, it must execute instructions just like your computer. We all know that computers are prone to failure so why not satelite dish receivers.

The solution involves removing the card then reinserting it and hitting the reset button near the card slot. This will cause the unit to reboot and re-acquire the satellite and all the programming. By forcing the unit to reboot it must read the information from the card and reload the software. Once reloaded the software will no longer have any glitches in it and should work as it is supposed to.

This should solve your problem. If it does not you may need to call your satelite provider.

We have direct tv, the other day while attempting to format our mitsubishi tv from the direct tv remote something went wrong and we lost about 20 channels from our regular and direct tv. Now when we swtich to those channels the screen goes blue and it states that power or connections to rgbhv or ybpr may be invalid. also when we change between channels, every channel goes black, fuzzy and then comes on. What went wrond and how do we recover them?

I would start with the DirecTV unit first and set the resolution back to 480i. This can be done in the menu or with a button on the front of the receiver, all modes are shown on the front of the unit. It's not uncommon to get that message when using the DTV input on MITS tv's, it's just a formatting glitch...but a bit annoying. Your set may not decode 720p resolution so I suspect those channels that broadcast that format may be your problem.

I have a HDMI cable hooked between my Direct tv DVR receiver and my Samsung flat screen HD plasma tv. When I turn to Direct tv channels 100 or 200 the screen begins to flicker. My tv is 1080i. This is what direct tv says is compatable. What causes this to happen? It does not occur on any other channel.

If the TV just Flickers for a few Seconds then the Picture is Good and Stable, That is just the HDMI re-syncing often due to different signals from 480i to 1080i being broadcasted. If it continues to Flicker then check the options for Video set-up in your DTV menu. Make sure all available resolutions are checked to display or select AUTO if possible. TIP: NEVER Unplug or Plug in HDMI cables with the Power ON. This can Short out the HDMI Input leading to a Repair. Turn off All Units then plug in your cables, When ALL are in then hit the Powers.
