It's mean "ink out". Not actually "inK", but ink level counter reached zero. If using original ink tank, just replace with new one. If using "hardware resetter", reset ink level counter. If using CIS ink tank, it will be auto reset.
Remember, it's program not actual ink. So, if you reset it, ink level will show full, even if you didn't refill ink tank.

after cleaning print heads, which were causing poor print quality,i get an error message ...ink cartridges cannot be recognized. i am using after market cartridges, but have used them before with no issues. how can i get them to be recognized

Head cleaning procedure consumes a lot of ink. Ink level counter run too. So, after some head cleaning ink level counter reach zero level (ink out/empty level). Ink tank can not use again even there are ink at tank actually, because chip reach zero level. Reset chip using hardware resetter and you can refill ink tank.

the printer keep informing that the colour ink not replaced.

There could be 2 reason for this problem. Either the ink tank is not installed correctly or the printer need to be reset. Follow the below steps which might help you resolve the issue:

STEP 1: Check the Ink Tank
If the ink tanks are not locked into place, ink will not be supplied to the print head.
  1. Turn the printer on.

  2. Check that the printer is powered on and open the printer cover. (The print head will move from the right to the center.)

  3. Confirm that the ink tanks are installed properly.

    Example: Ink Tanks installed correctly.

Example: Color Ink Tank installed incorrectly.

  4. Press down on the Push mark on the ink tank to lock the ink tank into the allocated slot of the print head.

Note: Press the ink tank until a click sound is made.

  5. Install the ink tanks in the order shown below.

  6. Close the printer cover.
STEP 2: Rest the printer
By resetting the printer's power, the print buffer is cleared and certain sensors are reset. If there is invalid data in the buffer, or sensors are stuck in a particular mode; errors may occur. Follow these steps to reset the printer:
  1. Turn the printer off with the Power button (if available).

  2. Disconnect the data cable from the printer (not applicable to WiFi, Bluetooth or Infrared) .

  3. Unplug the printer's power cord for approximately 10 minutes, and then plug it back in. If troubleshooting a communication issue, reconnect the data cable (not applicable to WiFi, Bluetooth or Infrared).

  4. Turn the printer back on.
If the above 2 steps does not resolve the issue, you printer might require a repair.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
