Step 1:
Laptop or Desktop ?
ENABLE NUMLOCK KEYS USING REGITRY Check the LED light that indicates whether or not the Number Lock is enabled. If the light is on, press the "Num Lock" key on your keyboard. Look for the light to turn off, signaling that the Number Lock has been disabled. Change your Number Lock status at start up (Number Lock is disabled on start-up by default). Click "Start," then "Run" and type "regedit" to pull up the Windows Registry. Open the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\" folder, then subsequently open the "Control Panel\" and "Keyboard\" folders. Double-click on "InitialKeyboardIndicators" and change its Data Value to "1," to disable Number Lock on start-up. A value of "2" would turn the Number Lock on after you log in, while a "0" value would result in it turning off after you log in.

CHANGE THE DEFAULT NUMLOCK KEY b> Go to the Start menu. From the Start menu choose "Run." Type in "regedit." Hit "OK" to open the regedit application. This allows you to change your computer's default settings. Navigate to the keyboard's default settings. Using the navigation bar at the left, choose "HKey_Users" then "Default" then "Control Panel" and finally "Keyboard." Look at the right side of the window. On the right are the various default options you can change for your keyboard. Double click on "InitialKeyboardIndicators" to change the NumLock default. A window will pop up. Change the NumLock default by entering a 0 or 2 in the "Value Data" field. Enter a 0 to have the NumLock set to off by default. To set the NumLock to on by default, enter 2. Hit the "OK" button to save your changes. Restart you computer. Your NumLock default changes will not take effect until your computer has been restarted.

when i type a word tomorrow on my laptop computer, t600r6w word display on monitor. what is a cause of this problem

Hi,

Welcome to Fixya. To be able to fix the issue you need to press FN + Numlock key of your keyboard. The numlock key is on that's why number appears instead of letters. Numlock key is next to F12 button.

Thanks for using Fixya.

How to activate NumLock as a default? My job requires that I work with numbers the majority of the time so I need to keep the NumLock active. However, each time I log off, the NumLock automatically deactivates. Need to learn how to keep it activate all of the time.

A simple reg edit will do this

For current user:
  1. Start Regedit
  2. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard\InitialKeyboardIndicators
  3. Change the value from 0 to 2
For all users:
  1. Start Regedit
  2. HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard\InitialKeyboardIndicators
  3. Change the value from 0 to 2

I cannot get backslash on logiboard keyboard

1) With your NUMLOCK on, hold the ALT key down and type 092 on your numeric keypad.  When you have NUMLOCK on, ALT and a 3-figure digit gives you special characters.  092 is the backslash on UK and Spanish keyboards, so hopefully it'll work for you.  If you get something different, you'll have to try different numbers until you find it

or

2) In Start --> Programs --> Accessories there's a program called Character Map.  This gives you a list of available characters

or

3) copy and paste this one:  \

can't seem to unlock numbers.. tried FN key and nothing there is no numlock key

There is no NumLock key on that keyboard. But you can switch it off by accessing the Windows on-screen keyboard. XP - Start - all programs - accessories - accessibility - on screen keyboard. The keyboard appears on screen with a NumLock key. Vista - smiliar commands to get the keyboard up.
