How to backup your Playstation 3 data

How to backup your Playstation 3 data

The steps below will walk you through backing up your data on your PS3. This includes any game data and downloaded content like music and videos. Note if you ripped alot of music and/or downloaded alot of content to your PS3 you may need an external hard drive to do the back on. If this is the case you will need on formated to FAT32 and not NTFS.

1. Go to the Settings menu and select System Settings.

2. Select Backup Utility

3. Highlight Back Up and press "X"

4. Next you will get a message asking if you want to continue. You will need to select YES and press "X" to continue. Note as the message states your Trophies will not be backuped as they are saved to your PSN account profiles. The link below will show you how to force an a sync of your Trophies to your online profile.

5. Below is another confirmation message that you will need to select YES on and press to continue. Note this is a message stating some copyright-protected content may not be backup. In most cases this will apply to movies that you have purchases off line. However in most cases you just need to redownload them after you restore your PS3's data.

6. Next make sure that the memory device that you want to do the backup to is selected that press "X". Note if you have more than one device connected that you will get more than one option to do the backup to.

Also if you get this message then there was not enough space to do the backup to. Like I mention above you may need to have an external hard drive to do the back of your data because as you can see below this backup needs 48GB of space to fully do the backup.

Once this screen comes up your backup is running. Note if you have alot of data to backup you will be waiting for awhile for the backup to finish.

7. Now the backup is finished press "O" to go back to the main menu.

Sometimes my ps3 freezes I hold the button to turn it off, then I turn it back on it says the system didn't turn off properly and says do I want to send a report to Sony it happened about 6 times. Is my ps3 crappy?

The first thing you need to check is to make sure that your PS3 is not over heating. A common issue is that users will put the system is a corner where the PS3 does not get good ventilation and/or block the air vent on the system causing the system to over heat.

If you have confirmed that your system is not over heating then you most likely have corrupted data on the hard drive and/or there is somethign wrong with the drive. The link below will help you address this. Note you will want to back up your data before you go through these steps just in case you have to format the drive.

my playstation 3 turns off every time i go to load a game film ect, but it will stay on the home screen al day can anyone help me

Best this to do is a PS3 full reset, but make sure you back up your game data
Here's what to do:
1. Take disk out.
2. Back Up save data.
3. Back up general data using PS3s backup Utility.
4. Sync Trophies.

Now to do the ps3 reset

Hard Reset procedure for the PS3 (from Sony CS). Be sure to backup your settings/games saves by doing a System > Backup on your PS3 or you may lose your game saves! Also, this is a last resort procedure prior to exchanging/returning to sony.
1. Power Off the PS3 via the power switch in back and power back on w/switch.
2. Hold Power Button on the Front until you hear 3 beeps.
3. Then go through the initial setup and then run a full format via System > Format. (will take approx 3 1/1 hours). You may need to have our AV cables ready if your using HDMI (in case HDMI isn’t detected after initial reset).
4. Restore your backup you made prior to doing factory/hard reset (optional, if you created a backup).

let me know how it goes.

Did you take a backup of your game saves or the system backup before upgrading the firmware of your PS3? if not then there is no method to retreive your game saves, however i am listing few steps for you so that you can take a backup in future before you upgrade your PS3

Game saves are of two types, the first ones are those which you can take on any memory stick (cf, ms duo, sd) and there are few saves which cannot be taken on a memory stick due to copyright issues, here you would have to take a full system backup and would require a external Hard Disk to save or a memory stick with a larger capacity.

Steps for Game Save Backups only

1. On the XMB (cross media bar), go to the Game section.
2. Go to Game Saves
3. Put in your memory stick
4. Find the game save you want to copy/backup, highlight it and hit the Triangle button.
5. Choose the menu option to Copy
6. Hit the X button on the memory stick and let it copy.
Steps for System Back up

In the XMB, go to System
Go to Settings > System Settings > Backup Utility
Then choose Back Up
Finally, pick the device to backup too (memory stick, usb harddrive, etc).

While doing a system backup all content of your PS3 including videos, music etc. would be included in the backup, however if you have purchased any copyright material, it would not get restored even if you do a complete system backup

Restoring files after using the Backup utility.

1. Plug in the USB drive that contains the data.
2. On the XMB go to Settings then System Settings
3. Go to Back Up Utility like before but
4. Choose Restore rather than Back Up
5. The PS3 does the rest

You can have the PS3 delete the data file from the USB drive by choosing Delete Backup Data.
