Tip & How-To about Apple iTunes
If you've just updated to iTunes 10.0.1, you might have noticed the new Ping sidebar and drop down menu. Here are instructions on how to remove them from Mac and Windows.
Quit iTunes and open Terminal. Paste the following lines, one at a time, and hit Enter for each:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes hide-ping-dropdown 1
defaults write com.apple.iTunes show-store-link-arrows 1
defaults write com.apple.iTunes disablePingSidebar 1
Quit iTunes and open a Command Prompt. Paste the following lines, one at a time, and hit Enter for each:
"%ProgramFiles%/itunes/itunes.exe" /setPrefInt hide-ping-dropdown 1
"%ProgramFiles%/itunes/itunes.exe" /setPrefInt show-store-link-arrows 1
"%ProgramFiles%/itunes/itunes.exe" /setPrefInt disablePingSidebar 1

I would start with
If you have iTunes 11 turn on the Sidebar. Go to iTunes>View and click on Show Sidebar. You can also do a Crtl+S to show the sidebar. The sidebar is where Devices appears. and Control+B to show the Menu bar
Next try another computer to help determine if you have an iPod or computer problem.
The update problem typically indicates a either a network problem or an Apple server problem. That happened to be a few times. I just retried and it work after a while.
