Tip & How-To about Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

Windows XP: How to run Disk Cleanup

Disk Cleanup is a file deletion utility that comes pre-installed in most Windows operating systems. It is a good, simple tool to use to free up disk space and to get rid of files that you don't need. Here are the steps to run Disk Cleanup in Windows XP:

A. Click on the Start button.

B. Click on My Computer. (If there is no My Computer icon on your Start menu, you can typically find it on the desktop.)

C. Right click on your hard drive (usually, this will be the C: drive) and select Properties.

D. Under the General tab, click the button labeled Disk Cleanup.

E. The program will take a little while to load while it figures out file sizes and locations. Once it finishes, the Disk Cleanup window will appear. The files you can delete to reclaim hard drive space are grouped by type (Temporary Internet Files, Office Setup Files, etc.) Next to each file type will be the amount of disk space you'll gain by deleting those files, and underneath the file types you can see a description of the currently-selected file type. Decide which files you can delete, and put a check mark next to those types. (If you're not sure which files are included in a certain group, you can click the View Files button below the description to see the exact files in question.)

F. Once you've selected all of the file types you want, click OK.

G. A confirmation box will appear; choose Yes to remove the files. Depending on how many files you chose to delete, the removal may go quickly or it might take a minute or two. Once it finishes, the Disk Cleanup window will close.
