Tip & How-To about Televison & Video

Slow start up of Circuit/cold starting of devices

Many electronic devices have a problem of aging or poor fabrication casuing undue service issues, This is a tip which I have sucessfully useful for many diffficult situations.

There can be many reasons for the slow build up for the picture to appear but this can be usually related mainly with the signal processing stages getting a residual bias due a weakness of components.
This can be mainly capacitors in the convergence section and possible weak semiconductors conducting on heat .
Use a heater to warm up the suspected area and switch on. If the picture on straight , change capacitor suspected. You can switch off the set to cool off then use a heated soldering iron( non static) to touch on small value capacitors. the moment the fault clears out you have the culprit. It mightt take time and patience but is quite effective.
So using the heater for scanning coarse area and using hot iron to corner the component.

make sure that you do not over use or abuse the PCB.

Hope you find this useful.

Can you sew leather with the Hobbylock 786? Also is a price of $190 good for this machine? Thank you

Difficult to say since we don't know anything about the leather. Generally, a soft, thin leather can be sewn on a domestic machine. However, a thick leather will cause problems. A domestic machine does not do well stitching thick leathers/fabrics. Usually, leather stitching will require a heavier needle, ie a leather/denim needle, which is a size 16. Frequently, manufacturer recommendations limit serger needles to no larger than a 90/12 needle. Using a needle that is too large could strike resulting in broken parts or knocking the machine out of time. Also, sewing thick fabrics places undue stress on the machine. It can cause gears to break or the motor to overheat and burn out. Be aware that a serger trims the fabric as it stitches, so there could be issues with the knives trying to cut the leather.

Guess I am somewhat confused why you would want to use a serger to stitch leather. Normally, a sewing machine that stitches one single line of thread is sufficient for leather. Overlocking uses multiple threads which increases the thickness of the seam.

Why wont my Bernina Virtuosa quilt three layers of fabric including a polyester batting?

Depends what exactly is happening with your machine, not stitching? fabric not moving? pulling up polyester??? puckering?? tension issues?? Verify it is threaded correctly. It could be an incompatibility of the needle/thread/fabric sandwich. Be sure to use a brand new sharp needle. You may need a walking foot. If it is not a good quality of polyester batting, it could cause issues. Poor quality thread. Tension not adjusted. Etc...

You can probably narrow down the problem by trying different batting, different fabric, different needles, and different thread on scrap fabric sandwiches.

Why is the fabric feeder pushing the fabric toward me instead of awayfrom me?

It is sewing in reverse. Shut down, restart the machine. If this doesn't help, press the backstitch button, and see if it stuck. Try changing the stitch length dial.
If this is an electronic machine, it may need to be serviced. This happened to a embroidery machine I had, when I tried to sew straight stitching. It needed to be service as it was an electronic issue.

Hello janin906,

The battery for this unit (like many MP3 players) does not appear to be end user replaceable. A quick websearch shows that there are several companies offering after market batteries and battery installation services. If you are comfortable repairing electronics devices you might be able to sucessfully replace the battery yourself. However repairing a modern electronic device should not be undertaken lightly. If you don't have experience working with electronics I would recommend contacting SanDisk to arrange battery replacement.

Best Regards
