Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

My letter keys now produce numbers!

You probably have accidently turned on numlk which turns mjkluio789 into 0123456789

Most laptops require a two key combination of Fn (function key) and NumLk (numeric lock key) to toggle it off and on. Sometimes there is a seperate NumLk by itself as it is on most desktop keyboards.

If this doesn't do it let me know the make and model of your laptop and I'll see if I can help further.

how to turn on numlk for gateway NE56R31u

You may have hit a certain combination of keys on your Gateway laptop and turned on the NumLock function accidentally. The result is that the rectangle of keys from the 7 key down to the question mark key have become a number-entry keypad. Worse, Gateway manuals don't discuss this function.

Hold down the "Fn" key on the bottom row of the keyboard, and press the "NumLk" key. Type the letters UIO. If they come out as numbers, move on to the next step. Hold down the "Fn" key and press the "F11" key. Type the letters UIO. If they come out as numbers, move on to the next step. Hold down the "Fn" key and press the F11 key and "Scroll Lk" key simultaneously. Type the letters UIO. If they come out as numbers, move on to the next step. Hold down the "Fn" key and press the "F9" key. Type the letters UIO. If they come out as numbers, move on to the next step. Hold down the "Fn" key and press the "Scroll Lk" key. Type the letters UIO. They should come up as letters. If none of these help, then it's probably a keyboard malfunction and you'll need to get it repaired.

My grand daughter has some how turned on the FN key so when she is typing numbers come on the screen instead of the letters. How do we stop this ?

The NumLkkey has been pressed andthe letters on the righr hand side on the keyboard has been converted to a number pad.
The NumLk key also doubles up as the ScrLk key, this is located near the F12 function key. Whenyou press this key to turn on the Numlk a LED will light up to indicate that the Number Lock has been pressed, press this key again to turn off the Number Lock and the NumLk LED will switch off and you will be able to type letters again.

why my asus a3000 keyboard not function correctly when i push U I O P the function is number when i push this key

NumLk (Numbers Lock) has been turned on. Pushing U I O P results in 4 5 6 * and pushing J K L results in 1 2 3. NumLk allows a block of keys on the right side of the keyboard to function as a numeric keypad to facilitate easier entry of numbers or numeric related data. There is an indicator that will be on when NumLk is on. To turn NumLk off, you need to push the key that has NumLk on it. It may be combined with a function key in which case you will need to hold down the Fn key while pushing the NumLk. If you manage to push the right key(s), the NumLk indicator should turn off and the keyboard will revert back to its normal operation (without the numeric keypad).
