Tip & How-To about Office Equipment & Supplies

Clean glass tip for copiers in general

Keep your glass Super clean.
If you can access Both sides of the glass, that is even better.

Be sure to use LINT free cloth to clean the glass with.

DO NOT use Tissues -- tissues are made of wood fibers which cause small scratches on the glass and mirrors.

IF you can get to the mirrors, Super carefully clean them, also -- again with LINT free SOFT cloth...(do not leave finger prints on them).

(do not leave finger prints on glass, either -- at any time.)

i have lines in printed material

If a print result of faxing, copying or scanning has uneven print density, or when copies and scans you make have vertical black lines, cleaning the platen glass may solve the problem.
  1. Turn off the power and disconnect the power cord.

  2. Prepare two clean, soft, and lint-free cloths.

    Note:
Do not use tissue paper or paper towels as they may damage the machine.

  3. Open the document cover.

  4. Wipe the platen glass (D), the inner side of the document cover (white area) (C), the glass of the ADF (A), and the inner side of the ADF (white area) (B) with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth moistened with water

    (B) ADF White Reference Area
    (C) Document Cover White Reference Area
    (D) Platen Glass

Note: If you have trouble wiping dirt, use diluted mild detergent (for dish washing).
    Caution:
    * Never use volatile liquids such as thinners, benzene, or alcohol; these can damage the machine.
    * The d
ocument cover white reference is easily damaged, so wipe it gently.
  5. Carefully wipe away moisture from each part with another soft, dry lint-free cloth. Do not leave any residue, especially on the platen glass.

  6. Close the document cover.

  7. Reconnect the power cord and power the machine back on.

bought a new drum and cartridge for brother dcp-7040. with new cartridge printing huge blotches, extra toner all over the page... old cartridge prints fine.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, I used to be a copier repair tech. I think you need one -- badly. I think you have 'contaminated' the unit if it started doing this w/new cartridge.

If you can retrace your steps and remove the drum and cartridge, and clean, clean, clean --everything you can see -- even the tiniest speck gets magnified.
If you can get to the mirrors, be sure to use lint free cloths on them. Do not scratch those babies, or you are toast. And get the ALL the glasses all super clean, on both sides of the glasses, if possible.

You might have to stand on your head, and find places you never thought you'd ever see.
This isn't step-by-step, but, if you put in the drum and cartridge, you Have a manual, right? This info tells you what the manual doesn't. right? and I wish you the best. Do not try to rush. Be sure to have the power off, keep a little extension magnet/mirror-tool handy to catch screws that roll away from you. Might need some 'tiny-screw-drivers' also.

and I wish you the best. Do not rush.

verical line(s) problem with canon mp780

Hi Nick, It's ONLY when you copy? I start by cleaning the platen glass. Wipe the Platen Glass with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth moistened with water. Then wipe with a clean, soft, dry, lint-free cloth making sure not to leave any residue, especially on the Platen Glass. If you have trouble getting the scanning area clean, wipe with diluted mild detergent (for dish washing). Do the same thing for the white area under the platen lid. If this does not resolve the problem let me know. His Dudeness
