My Toshiba laptop is very slow at booting up. I have been told that it is because I have approx 130 programs in my start up folder. However, short of turning one off and then rebooting for each application, is there some way of determining which app's can be deleted from my start up file?

For that go to start menu->run or press windows key + R key so you can see run type in "msconfig" then press enter then you can see system configuration utility click on last tab startup and disable all thewn apply and restart then all startup disable. If you want to uninstall any software for that go to start menu->control panel->add remove programs then uninstall software from there as you want . Also follow below procedure to speedup the computer. Press windows key + R then you can see type in run "%tmp%" without "" then press enter then remove all temp files.Type in run "prefetch" without "' then press enter remove all prefetch files. Type in run "chkdsk /r" then press enter then press "y" then restart computer then it fix errors on harddrive. Scan computer updated antivirus it is best antivirus. Everytime I restart my computer I have to run the connection diagnostics to get access to the internet. I am running windows xp with an AT&T gateway 2 router.

Cut power to the router.
Reconnect it, and let it start-up, for 2 minutes.

Restart your computer.
Click Start
Click Run
Type CMD and press ENTER.
Type IPCONFIG /ALL and press ENTER.
Record the information, e.g., 'IPCONFIG /ALL > temp.txt'
Type IPCONFIG /RENEW and press ENTER.
Better? Worse? Same?
