Tip & How-To about Office Equipment & Supplies

Determining whether your ribbon is CSO or CSI

A ribbon used in thermal printing will be either:

  • CSO - Coated side out
  • CSI - Coated side in
The ink is on one side or the other of the roll of ribbon. To determine which side the ink is on, take a label and stick it to the ribbon and peel it back off. Ink will stick on the adhesive, turning it black on the side that has ink on it.

does epson tm-t88iiip have a ribbon

No. thermal printers do not use ribbons or ink cartridges. They have thermal heads that heat up and use that heat to print on the specially treated, heat sensitive paper rolls. If the printer has stopped printing, check to see if the paper is thermal and loaded correctly (shiny side facing the front when it feeds).

Changed rolls of labels on Zebra GX 420T and now nothing prints

Were the new labels thermal paper? Thermal printers need specially made paper to work right.

Zebra 105SL thermal Label Printer prints blank with new supplies

Some possible reasons:
1. The darkness is not set high enough for the paper/ribbon combination
2. The ribbon is on backwards. Zebra uses coated-side out ribbons so the ribbon should be coming off the right side of the roll if you're looking at it from the side.

Hope that helps !

resin rolling backward

The ribbon is loaded backwards. The ribbon can be loaded in two ways. In the industry, it is called coated side in or coated side out, meaning the ink side is either out or in. Zebra printers are all coated side out, or ink on the bottom side as it feeds off of the roller.

make sure the ribbon is installed properly. The thermal ribbons are only coated on one side with ink. Make sure the right side is facing the paper. If that is not the issue the thermal head might be bad.
