How to Secure a Wireless Network from Hackers?

The first thing you have to do is to position the access point's antenna in a place which restricts the range of its signal to go further than the required area. You should not put the antenna close to a window because glass can't obstruct its signals. Place it in a central location of the building.

You can boost the signal range of a WiFi computer network in several ways: Answer:
  • reposition your router (or access point) to avoid obstructions and radio interference. Both reduce the range of WiFi network equipment. Common sources of interference in residences include brick or plaster walls, microwave ovens, and cordless phones. I keep losing the internet signal and going offline. LAN indicates pending??? How do I perform a system reset with Linux??


Power cycle the system by shutting it down and switching it on after at least thirty seconds. Check network settings to verify the IP address and other related information. Determine if the network card is working adequately. Identify the malfunctioning adapter by disabling the cards one by one. Move one of the portable hosts--such as a laptop--closer to the router. If it works better, interference or low signal strength is the reason for poor Internet access. Inadequate signal performance can be caused by several factors including cordless devices working within the frequency range (2.4 GHz) of a wireless network, shiny surfaces and too much distance between hosts and access points. Resolve this issue by using a wireless repeater?a device that amplifies wireless signal so it reaches distant areas within the premises. Minimize signal interference by maintaining a distance of at least one meter between cordless devices and the router. Alternatively, buy gadgets that function at frequencies other than 2.4 GHz. Try changing the WiFi channel for better results. Check the functioning of wireless router and access points. Adjust the router antenna to get an optimum signal. Most wireless routers come with omni-directional antennae to send signals in all directions, a situation appropriate for a square-shaped network. If hosts are arranged in a linear fashion, use an antenna that sends signals only in one direction. Some portable routers have internal antenna, giving more freedom to users who are on the go. Very short range of wireless network


Hi,

Your Belkin Wireless router being an RX/TX device follows the basic rules of radio communication:
1. LOS - line of sight range; anything in between the router and the laptops such as doors, walls, drapes, foliage is an obstacle that reduces the signal strength to a certain degree;
2. Height is might, the higher the router the better;
3. Antenna, the more exposed the further the range. Internal antennas such as in most laptops reduce both receive and transmit. Likewise, placing the router in a shelf or cabinet reduces antenna exposure. How you position (orient the antenna also plays a role in coverage. Some materials will reflect radio signals and change antenna radiation pattern.

A few things you can try to improve coverage:
a. Mount the router to the highest practical position;
b. ensure that there are no obstruction between router and laptop;
c. position router to approximate practical center between two furthest laptops;
d. install an external antenna if the Belkin would allow;
e. Replace the F5D7230-4 with another with more punch such as a LinkSys WRT300N; and/or
f. In really extreme range, install repeaters.

When optimizing your existing equipment, consider: * Placing antennas in a good location, at a good angle. * Avoiding physical things that block signals. * Reducing the interference from other things that transmit radio waves. Before starting adjustment, make sure that antennas and cables are securely fastened! If your network has more than a couple wireless devices, before you move things, decide which wireless devices are transmitting the heaviest load. These links are important to optimize. NETGEAR products have automatic data rate fallback, which allows increased distances without losing connectivity. It also means that devices that are further away are inherently slower. Therefore the most critical links in your network are those where the traffic is high, and the distances are great. Optimize those, first. The ones that are least important are links that have little, occasional traffic, and which have a strong signal strength. Picking Good Locations for Antennas * Antennas should be in line-of-sight of one another, where possible. Put your face next to one antenna, to find whether the other is visible. * Place high, and clear of obstructions as practical. * Keep antennas 2 feet from metal fixtures such as sprinklers, pipes, metal ceiling, reinforced concrete, metal partitions. (However, antennas on roofs do not necessarily give the best results. ) * Keep away from large amounts of water such as fish tanks and water coolers. * Antennas transmit weakly at the base, where they connect. So don't expect good reception from the bottom of a router or access point. * For multi-story buildings, placing antennas at 45 degrees (diagonally) or 0 degrees (straight out parallel to the floor) may be most effective. Reducing Interference Avoid windows unless communicating between buildings. (Windows let in interference from the outside world.) Place antennas away from various electromagnetic noise sources, especially those in the 2400 ? 2500 MHz frequency band. Common noise-creating sources are: * Computers and fax machines (place wireless equipment no closer than 1 foot) * Copying machines, elevators and cell phones (no closer than 6 feet) * Microwave ovens (no closer than 10 feet)
