NiMh also leak but you can clean by your finger tips. Weak alkaline batteries make a mess but can be cleaned with water then rub dry with cue tips. Save your remotes, wipe clean with damp cloth often.

How long do the batteries last when shooting video with Eye-Q 3042 AF camera, using standard batteries?

What you call standard batteries, could be the worst battery there is.
Try using NiMH rechargeable batteries. Even alkaline batteries reform worse. And never use manganese (Zinc-Carbon) batteries. They not only can't deliver enough power on the right voltage long enough. They easy start leaking and can damage the camera.

keep up to this:
Always be sure the batteries are charged and suited for your device.
Check contacts of the batteries and in the battery compartment of your device. Dirty or oxidised contacts can be cleaned with a dry cloth, or a cotton swap. Never use sharp tools to clean contacts or anything in or on electronic equipment.
Always charge batteries before using it for the first time, or if you have not used it for a long period. 3 months is a very long period.
Always charge sets of batteries (2 or 4) together.
Do not use alkaline batteries unless it is absolutely necessary. In some cases, alkaline batteries may have a shorter service life than NiMH. Alkaline battery performance is limited, especially at low temperatures. The use of NiMH batteries is recommended.
Never use manganese (Zinc-Carbon) batteries in electronic devices.
These batteries are only to be used in flash lights.

Camera won't turn on with new batteries

Depending of what you use, always be sure all batteries are the same, charged and suited for your camera. Most of the time even new Ni-CD rechargeable batteries won't work, because the voltage is to low, according to Ni-MH or alkaline batteries.

Never use manganese (Zinc-Carbon) batteries in your camera.
Also make sure all contacts on batteries and in the camera are clean and shiny. Only use dry cloth or cotton swabs if you want to clean contacts.

Most of the time, you should check the (rechargeable) batteries if they all are good. Also check if all contacts in the battery holder are clean and shiny. Then, very important. Check and recheck if you did insert all batteries the correct way. Only one wrong inserted, will cause the speed light to refuse any function.

Also check if the battery door is closed correct.

speedlight

In your Speedlight you can use 4 AA sized batteries.
Alkaline, Lithium and rechargeable NiMH batteries.
Be sure your batteries are charged, or new. Never use different type together. So all 4 should be same brand, same capacity and same date.
When you did not use the speed light for a long time, two things could have happened. The contacts in the battery holder are dirty, or oxidised or the capacitor for the high voltage has leaked or dried out.
The contacts you can clean if they are not oxidised to strong. Never use sharp tools to sanding paper to clean contacts. Just use a dry cloth. It the contacts are really dirty, put some contact oil on a cotton swap and rub the contacts for a while. Make sure you rub all the oil away, using the dry cloth.
If old batteries, can't make the Speedlight sing, yes you should hear an oscillator, the on / off switch can be dirty or oxidised. If the oscillator runs, but the ready light does not go on, the capacitor is gone. Needs a technician to replace the cap.

My TI-89 Calculator will not turn on. I have changed the batteries with no result. The calculator was damaged while it was in the possession of my brother, thus I do not know what is wrong with it. When I took the batteries out to replace them, however, there was accumulated corrosion.....water damage, maybe? Thoughts?

The damage was battery corrosion. If you CAREFULLY take a damp(not dripping wet) rag and wipe the contacts of the corrosion you may have luck. The batteries just leaked, Very common especially for cheap "Heavy Duty" batteries. Alkalines seem to hold up better in a discharged condition. I hope this helps.Do wash your hands after the cleaning. A q-tip may also be of help. Just wet it and squeeze most of the water from it.
