what causes streaky copies

A few questions:
- Did this problem just start?

- Was there a paper jam and when the paper was dislodged the next few sheets were streaked? Running a few more pages usually clears this.

- Is this a new toner cartridge? Did you just change the cartridge? Are you low on toner? Try removing the cartridge and gently rocking it back and forth, side to side. This will distribute the toner more evenly.

- Is this a heavier weight paper then previously used? Try going back to the old weight and see if the problem continues.

We bought a new cartridge for our AL-1631 copier. Up until the time we installed the new cartridge, we never had a problem with this copier. Now the copier indicator light is telling us that it needs a new cartridge. I have shaken and thumped the new cartridge a multitude of times hoping that the toner was caked. For a few times, that seemed to work, but each time the copier is shut down and we try to make copies, we get the same indicator light that tells us that the cartridge needs to be replaced. We have probably only made a couple of dozen copies on the new cartridge, so we know it's not empty. Any ideas? There seems to be a 'clicking' sound that should stop when the copier is warmed up, but it just keeps clicking until the unit shows the indicator light warning of an empty cartridge.

Sounds just like an empty cartridge. There is a bar with a long spring on it inside the toner cartridge. As the machine tries to add toner the bar "scrapes" the toner while stirring it in order to ensure all the toner is used. When the chamber is empty or near empty you can hear the spring making more or less a thump thump kind of noise about every 5 seconds or so. If this sounds like the noise you are hearing then it sounds like the toner chamber is empty. Did you buy this cartridge locally? If so you may be able to return it. Was it refilled? Remanufactured? or was it in a OEM Sharp Box with AL100TD or similar on the box? It sounds like either you got a bad/empty cartridge or the only onther possibility is, and I actually had a customer do this once, was accidentally put the old one back it the machine. Pulled the old one out. Unboxed the new one and somehow slid the old one back in. Worst thing was they threw the "new" cartridge away and by the time the light came on again it was long gone!

Just purchased a Zerox XC1255 Copier at an Auction. Replaced the toner cartridge because the light was on. The copies seem to have excessive toner in the background of the copies. I am wondering if I should replace the Drum Cartridge. What else in that system can I clean?

Could be a bad drum unit. Is the new toner cartridge a refilled? Remanufactured? or Brand New Xerox brand toner? If it is refilled or remanufactured I would run some copies and give it a chance to clear. Sometimes they end up with too much toner in the Developer mix and can be overtoned which causes a general background over the whole page. They should clear up as you run copies, say within 100 pages. Also try manually lightening the copy with the exposure control on the operation panel. If lightening the copy clears all of the background then you need to have the optics cleaned. There are 4 mirrors under the large original glass that need to be cleaned. If all this fails then you are looking at either drum unit or a defective or out of balance toner/developer cartridge.

Fading on one side of the paper - Dell 1815dn laser MFP

The Printhead IS located above the toner cartridge on this model. There is a small opening that allows the laser light to shine through the case to the imaging unit on the toner, but you can not access the the laser without disassembling the printer.

Even though this is a new toner cartridge, it may be defective, even more likely if it is a non-Dell or remanufactured toner. Try reinstalling the old toner cartridge. Even if it prints light because it is low, if it is uniform across the page then the new toner is defective. Return or exchange it with the manufacture.
