XBOX 360 red ring fix.

This is a guide/tip for more experienced users. Not responsible for any acidents or damage caused by use of this page:
Tools Required:T10 Torx Bit
T8 Torx Bit
Screwdriver(very small flathead)
Thermal Paste
Brass/Plastic Brush
Set of Picks(optional, but easier)
More than likely if you own an xbox you will eventually get a red ring where the green ring should be. It is quite an easy fix. first take the faceplate off, then hardrivem and the 2 mesh looking plastic pieces off from the top and bottom.Take them off with a pick or small flathead screwdriver. You must depress the tabs through the holes roughly in the middle on sides. should be 3 to a side. After that you can proceed to open the case.To do this you need your small screwdriver or pick.On the backside there are plastic tabs to depress in then you need to pull the xbox apart as you go down the tabs(remove the other side as well)very easy to do. After that remove the torx screw on eachside of case/casing.remove startup button board by taking 3 t8 screws out.then proceed to unhook the disc drive(on backside of disc drive)and fan shroud. The shroud is helf by a tab in the middle, remove the connector next to left fan. Then pull the board out when you hacve removed ALL screws from th eoutside...turn the circuit board over and remove the x-clamps by sticking screwdriver between the stud and the curved part of clamp and twist axialy towards the center to pop the clamps off. Once removed the heatsinks will come out and now is where the fun begins. Clean the paste off of the bottom of both heat sinks and the tops of the cpu and the gpu(small black chips) be gentle but fast.Once done apply thermal paste(less than a dime size and spread even coats(use a credit card)) and 1/4" 8x32 screws at a 1/4" with 2 nylon and 2 steel washers. The nylon washers should toouch the circuit board on both sides(one on each sideunder steel washer) the order should be:screw head, steel washer, nylon washer, motherboard, nylon washer, steel washer, then heatsink. hold board vertical and place the 4 screws for one heatsink complete with washers on each side throuigh the m/b.Then hold heatsink close enough to be able to screw in all 4 screws(this part is a pain)fairyl tight. Then after that is said and done, put the m/b back in and hook up the disc drive and power to the xbox. let it run for two minutes with the fan unplugged, then shutdown and retorque the screws to the heatsinks, after that is completed you may reassemble! Have Fun and Good Luck

You might need a torx screwdriver. Does the screw head look like a star? They come in different sizes. Example sizes are T5, T6, T7, T8, T9, T10

what size allen key is used to take the four screws out of the bottom of the unit? is it metric?

The screws in the bottom are Torx T10, which is a lot smaller than the Torx bits in a typical screwdriver set. The other problem is that since they are in deep holes you need a long and skinny (about 1 1/2") bit to reach them. Thus you need a dedicated T10 screwdriver, not an interchangable bit in a holder. You can get a T10 screwdriver at sears for about $5. You can also get the Kobalt folding Torx set (with Torx sizes from 9 to 40) for about $10 at Lowes.

Correct Screwdriver

It is hard to find this screwdriver by itself. The easiest thing to do is to go to Lowes or similar and buy a bit set that has these type of bits. On the package it will refer to them as T8, T10, T15 etc. The one you will need most likely will be a T10. Lowes item number 128617. $4.97.

Hope this helps,
