Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

Windows Password reset/recovery

Just finished reading one of the guru's marvelous tip on Windows password recovery (http://www.fixya.com/support/r5393255-windows_password_recovery), thought I'd share a different method which I use:

  1. First reboot Windows XP in safe mode by re-starting the computer and pressing F8 repeatedly as the computer starts up.
  2. Then (in safe mode) click Start and then click Run. In the open box type "control userpasswords2" (without the quotes, of course)
  3. You will now have access to all the user accounts, including the administrators account and will be able to reset the lost password.
  4. Just click the administrators user account (or the target user's account), and then click Reset Password. You will need to add a new password in the New password and the Confirm new password boxes, and confirm by clicking OK.
  5. All done, you have recovered the lost password ;-)
Hope readers will find this helpful..

how do i reboot my laptop when i cant get on because i forgot my password

I think you are getting confused with reboot and re installing windows.
Rebooting is just turning your PC off and on again.
You may be able to do a system recovery from either the F8 boot menu, or you may have a dedicated key to press depending on the make of the PC.
You should be able to reset your windows password if you follow this guide http://www.fixya.com/support/r5393255-windows_password_recovery
