Howto ask computer question

Before you post "me computer not work!", do bit of the homework, establish that your power cable, monitor cable, keyboard, mouse are connected, in case of laptop, check if battery is charged.

If asking the question, be succint and you need to give following information depending on the problem:

1. if computer is brandname - give name, model and year if possible
2. in unbranded computer, if you know - motherboard manufacturer and model including version, processor, ram, hard drive model
3. operating system including updates
4. problem description

for example:

1. laptop toshiba, a3, 2005 model, operating win xp sp3
2. stop loading window as windows beginnig screen

That is correct description of the problem and machine and I or somebody else with knowledge of this particluar problem can provide you with solution or advice. In that particular case I can now direct you to try to load safe mode and if your computer still stop, I can help you how to restore it to previous working state.

If you give me description - "me computer do not work" - or even better: "do not work!", and what do not work?!? telepathy is overrated! psychics are good only on TV! you did not provided any information but want solid answer...

what is the best way to connect 2 computers to this monitor


If you have two separate computers for different purposes, such as personal and work use, you may find it convenient and necessary to connect both to a single monitor. Many monitors have dual inputs, making such a connection simple. However, you might need a keyboard, video and monitor switch to accomplish this task if the monitor lacks a second input. Dual Inputs
Step 1 Examine the back of your monitor for the presence of dual video inputs, such as a single VGA and DVI or HDMI output.
Step 2 Connect the VGA cable to one computer. Plug the other end of the cable to the matching input on the monitor. Rotate the retaining screws until tight at both ends of the cable.
Step 3 Plug the DVI or HDMI cable into the back of the second computer. Insert the other end into the monitor's digital video input. Screw down the retaining screws if you're using DVI.
Using a KVM Switch
Step 1 Ensure both computers are turned off. Place the KVM switch on your desk where it is within convenient reach.
Step 2 Locate the video output port on the back of the KVM switch. Plug a VGA cable into this port. Plug the other end of the VGA cable into the monitor.
Step 3 Plug the VGA monitor outputs from each computer into the inputs on the back of the KVM switch. Tighten the retaining screws down for each connected VGA cable on the computers and the KVM switch.
Step 4 Plug the keyboard and mouse cables into their respective outputs on the KVM switch. Plug each set of keyboard and mouse cables from their ports on each computer into the matching inputs on the KVM switch. Plug each cable in sequentially to avoid mixing them up between machines.
Step 5 Double-check that the mouse, keyboard and monitor cables leading from each computer all correspond to the right machine. Plug the KVM switch's power cord into a nearby AC outlet or power strip.
Step 6 Turn the computers and monitor on to verify the connections are correct.

Today's laptops and desktop computers are more user-friendly. As more people start use computers, operating systems, software and hardware accessories are coming with better instruction manuals and streamlined interfaces. Here are a few basic steps to hook up your computer no matter which brand you bought.

Connect the power cable to the back of the computer tower. The male end of this plug is often on the computer, but it is recessed into the casing. Once this power plug is connected, you don't want to plug it into an outlet until the entire computer is set up. Attach the monitor cables to the back of the monitor and then to the back of the computer tower. This cable will probably be the VGA type, which has a wide set of prongs in the middle and two screws on the outside. Be sure to twist the screws in to ensure the cable has a solid connection. Secure the monitor's power cable to the back of the monitor and then plug it into an outlet or power strip. Attach the mouse to the USB port on the back of your keyboard. The keyboard then plugs into another USB port on the back of the computer tower. Turn on the computer and the monitor.

If the computer powers up but the monitor doesn't display anything, make sure the VGA monitor cable is secured. If the status light on your monitor doesn't turn on, check the power cable connection. Check that the mouse and keyboard work once the computer turns on. Now you can hook up other devices, such as a printer or a web cam. A printer often can connect to a USB port and also may have its own power cable; a web cam usually just plugs into a USB or firewire port.

Monitor is not on

Make sure the monitor is on. If no power light (green or orange light) is seen on the monitor display try pressing the power button until it comes on. If no light comes on after several attempts continue to below connections not connected properly.

Computer is asleep

If your computer monitor was on and you stepped away from the computer and upon returning it was black it's likely that the computer is asleep. Try moving your mouse, clicking the mouse buttons, and/or pressing any key (space bar) on the keyboard to wake it up.

Connections not connected properly

If the computer is properly plugged in, make sure it's getting getting power.

If you are not receiving power from a known working wall outlet and if the power cord is removable, replace it with the one connected to the computer and attempt to power on the monitor again. If the monitor still does not get power or it is not removable, it is recommended that the monitor be replaced or serviced at a local TV / Computer repair shop.

If the monitor is receiving power, check the status light.

If the light is orange or flashing ensure that the monitor is not in a suspend mode by moving the mouse or pressing a key on the keyboard. If the computer does not get a display by moving the mouse or touching the keyboard, turn off the computer and monitor and reconnect the data cable from the back of the computer, and if removable, the back of the monitor. Turn the computer back on; if you still encounter the same issue, continue reading through the other possibilities.

Monitor settings are not correct

Ensure that the brightness and contrast is turned up or attempt to adjust the brightness and contrast. If adjusting the brightness or contrast has no affect on the monitor continue reading through the other possibilities.

No Post

Does the computer beep when it is powered on and/or does it appear that the computer has activity? If the computer does not beep or beeps abnormally it is possible that the computer itself is experiencing a hardware issue or is exhibiting a No Post.

Hardware Issue

If you have followed the above recommendations and are still encountering the same issue, it is likely that the computer may have either a bad video card or monitor. The best method of determining this is to do one or both of the following:

  • Disconnect your monitor and attempt to connect it to another computer. This can be a friend or family's computer and/or it can be taken to a service center.
  • Borrow a computer monitor and connect it to your computer. This will not harm the other computer monitor in any way.

If your monitor works on another computer it is safe to assume that the video card or potentially the motherboard within the computer is bad. Steps in troubleshooting a video card can be found on document CH001028.

when i trun on my computer the monitor will not work. it says Check Signal Cable


This issue can be caused by any of the below possibilities.

  1. Monitor is not on
  2. Computer is asleep
  3. Connections not connected properly.
  4. Monitor settings are not correct.
  5. No Post.
  6. Hardware issue.
Solution:The following is monitor troubleshooting. If your monitor receives a proper display until it gets into Windows 3.x, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows ME, or Windows XP please refer to document CH000192.

Monitor is not on

    1. Check your Keyboard-Video-Mouse (KVM) switch. If the system is connected to a monitor, mouse, and keyboard through a Keyboard-Video-Mouse (KVM) switch, or console selector switch, then disconnect the switch and connect monitor, mouse, and keyboard directly to the system. If this solves the issue, please contact your switch manufacturer for support and compatibility on the switch. Some switches can have a firmware update applied to resolve common problems.

      Note: BladeCenter Telco chassis - The KVM module contains keyboard port, mouse port, Power LED, Location LED, Critical Telco Alarm LED, Major Telco Alarm LED, Minor Telco Alarm LED and a video port. The PS2 keyboard and mouse connectors are standard 6-pin Mini Din. The Telco alarms mirror the Telco alarms located on the front panel of the media tray because they use the same signal lines. The KVM module allows the connection of a VGA monitor for system maintenance and control. The video connector is a standard 15-pin VGA. The KVM module is hot-swappable. It is docked into an edge card connector located on the backplane:

    2. If you have your system daisy chained for KVM capabilities using the C2T port (e.g. xSeries 330),
      then you must flash the C2T firmware after flashing the system BIOS, in order for the mouse and keyboard to work. Otherwise, after a BIOS flash, you will lose keyboard/mouse capabilities unless you walk up to each machine and push the select button.

    1. Check for POST/startup errors. If you are getting a POST/startup error on the keyboard and/or mouse:

    2. Verify that all items are firmly connected to the correct ports, and that the cables are undamaged with no bent pins. The PS/2 style mouse and keyboard ports look identical, but are not interchangeable. The mouse and keyboard must be attached to the correct ports in order to be recognized by the system and to function correctly.
    3. Swap each item for known good units. If a new item works where the original did not, then the original component must be faulty.

    4. If the keyboard works during the POST/BIOS screens, but not in the operating system, check software logs for device driver errors. Contact your software vendor for more support in configuring the I/O devices.

    5. Check the F1 Setup error logs for system component failures or errors. These are found under Event/Error Logs. Troubleshoot suspect components further to determine if the hardware is faulty. If an IBM component is determined to be faulty, please contact your local IBM Support Center for warranty replacement of the part(s). Please have the Field Replacement Unit (FRU) / Customer Replacement Unit (CRU) part number and Machine Type, model and serial number ready.

    1. Run hardware diagnostics. Replace any parts found defective.

    1. If you can down the system, check the keyboard cable connector on the system unit for proper voltage.

    2. Power off the system.
    3. Disconect the keyboard cable form the system unit.
    4. Power on the system and check the keyboard cable connector on the system unit for the voltages shown:

    5. If the voltages are not correct, replace the system board. Otherwise, replace the keyboard.
