windows security center will not turn on

The role of the Security Center component in Windows is to notify you of security-related events.

Generally, the Security Center will prompt you when one of your security programs is out of date or disabled.

If this component is disabled, Windows will no longer be able to alert you of these events. Additionally, if disabled, you will be presented with the option to turn it back on.

If you receive a message that states it cannot be started after pressing the "Turn on now" button, you must enable the dependency service.

Press the "Windows" and "R" keys simultaneously on your keyboard.

Type "Services.msc" in the Run box and click "OK."

This loads the Windows services tool.

Double-click "Security Center" to load the properties for this service.

Click the "Startup type" drop-down menu and change from "Disabled" to "Automatic." Press the "Apply" button to save the change.

The service will automatically start the next time you load your computer.

You may force the service to start without rebooting, by pressing the "Start" button.

You should now be able to press the "Turn on now" button in the Security Center without error.

Hope this helps

what is nap server?

Network Access Protection (NAP) is a Microsoft technology for controlling network access of a computer host based on the system health of the host, first introduced in Windows Server 2008.
With Network Access Protection, system administrators of an organization's computer network can define policies for system health requirements. Examples of system health requirements are whether the computer has the most recent operating system updates installed, whether the computer has the latest version of the anti-virus software signature, or whether the computer has a host-based firewall installed and enabled. Connecting or communicating computers have their health status evaluated. Computers that comply with system health requirements have full access to the network. Administrators can configure health policies that make it possible to ensure that computers not in compliance with system health requirements have restricted access to the network.

my system restore has been turned off by a group policy "whatever that means"

Resolution 1. Click Start, Run and type regedit.exe and press Enter
2. Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ SystemRestore
In the right-pane:
  • Delete the value DisableConfig
  • Delete the value DisableSR
3. Exit the Registry Editor.
In Windows XP Professional, you can accomplish the above using Group Policy Editor as well.
1. Click Start, Run and type GPEDIT.MSC
2. Navigate to this path:
-> Computer Configuration
--> Administrative Templates
---> System
----> System Restore
3. Set Turn off System Restore to Not Configured
4. Set Turn off Configuration to Not Configured

For standalone Windows Vista systems, use these steps:
Using the Group Policy Editor
If your edition of Windows Vista includes the Group Policy Editor snap-in (gpedit.msc), follow these steps:
1. Click Start, type gpedit.msc and press ENTER
2. Go to the following branch:
Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | System | System Restore 3. Double-click Turn off Configuration and set it to Not configured.
Note: If the above setting is already set to Not configured, set it to Enabled and click Apply. Then revert back the setting to Not configured, and click Apply, OK.
4. Exit the Group Policy Editor.
Using the Registry Editor
1. Click Start, type regedit.exe and press ENTER
2. Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ SystemRestore 3. In the right-pane, delete the value named DisableConfig
4. Exit the Registry Editor.

If you set the Turn of configuration option to Enabled, the option to configure System Restore on the Configuration Interface disappears. If the Turn off Configuration setting is disabled, the configuration interface is still visible, but all System Restore configuration defaults are enforced, and the Create button is grayed out. If you set it to Not configured, the configuration interface for System Restore remains, and the user has the ability to configure System Restore.
