Tip & How-To about Refrigerators

Older refrigerator too warm? check this first

If your refrigerator is an older one and, is too warm inside, feel the sides and front for warmth from the mullion defrost heaters being on if this is the case: look behind it on the back you will see a hole and, a decal that says: defrost timer the defrost timer is a small clock like motorized switch that defrosts the refrigerator once every 24 hours; insert a blade screwdriver and, turn the slotted gear in the defrost timer until it clicks; this will be off if the refrigerator in the next few days ices up, replace the defrost timer.

Freezer too warm, and i feel heat on the door seals

The door seals warm is from the mullion heater that minimizes moisture from forming in that area, under working conditions. You need to provide more information.... What did you see that made you defrost it 3 weeks ago..

the divider wall between the fridge and freezer stays very hot to the touch. Possibly the defrost mechanism is stuck??? Any ideas?

Check the fan which cools the compressor . Sometimes something gets caught in the blade . Also check that the coils at the front bottom are clean . If the motor is not turning and nothing obstructing the fan blade , replace the motor ( condensor motor )

Is it normal for the outsides to get very hot

No. If you feel the sides getting hot, it usually means that the ref. isn't cold enough inside. There us either an electric heater or a pass of the hot gas from the compressor around the edges of the doors as well as the mullion between them. If they feel hot, it's too warm inside.... Check the ice cream: It's the 1st to go.

Possibly the Mullion heater which keeps the door gasket from freezeing when the door is shut and humidity is high.
