Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

How to Erase a Burned CD

CD-RW stands for CD re-writeable. This type of disc can be written on or "burned" multiple times. However, in order to burn music or data onto a CD-RW that already has something on it, you must first erase the current contents of the disc. No special software is needed to do this, as you can do it with the Windows Media Player program, which already comes installed on all computers with the Windows operating system. Regular CD-R discs cannot be erased or reused--the discs must be labeled as CD-RW.

Instructions
Step 1.
Click on the "Start" menu button in the lower left-hand corner of the screen. Select "Windows Media Player" from the pop-up menu.
Step 2.
Select the "Library" tab in the main Windows Media Player screen.
Step 3.
Insert the CD-RW that you want to erase in the CD-ROM drive. Close the "AutoPlay" window if it appears.
Step 4.
Right-click the CD-ROM drive in the "Navigation" pane on the left side of Windows Media Player. Select "Erase disc" from the drop-down menu. This will automatically erase the contents of the disc.

How do I remove the write protection on a burnable music CD? I am trying to reformat a burnable CD and i keep getting a message saying the disc is write protected and wont let me continue.

Hi

You do not say which operating system you are using.

I always advise askers (and answerers too) to use ordinary language to describe and identify things, devices, situations and problems and to avoid technical jargon as much as possible. Where jargon is unavoidable, I advise that care is taken to use technical terms as accurately as possible and that alternative terms, definitions and clarifications are always added in order to aid understanding and minimize confusion.

Your expression "reformat" is unclear.

To wipe the entire storage area or Partition (structured division of a storage area) of storage devices or media that previously contained data is to 'format'.

To "reformat" means, in ordinary language, to return something to its original condition. The term "reformat" is not conventionally used in computer terminology, probably because no storage area, once written in, can ever truly be restored to a virgin state. Formatting does not really wipe data; it just merely instructs and enables the operating system to ignore, or 'be blind' to it. All data written to a storage area can technically be recovered and read, if the right tools, software and techniques are applied. This is why law enforcement agencies and commercial forensic Data Recovery laboratories are able to recover and access lost or deleted data.

So please avoid the word "reformat", which can be confusing because it is sometimes loosely (but wrongly) used as an alternative term for 'Restoration' (restoring a computer to its Factory Settings).

Your expression "burnable music CD" is also unclear.

The term "burnable" (or the more commonly used term, 'writable') is usually used to describe a disc on which it is possible to burn data (information, documents, music, pictures, spreadsheets, designs, drawings, web designs, templates etc.), but onto which no data has yet been burned.

If data already exists on a writable disc, then the disc is usually described as a 'burned'.

Therefore, by definition, a writable "music CD" is a 'burned' rather than a "burnable" CD.

There are 2 types of writable CDs.

CD-R, which can be burned only once and on which any data burned is permanent and cannot be erased, overwritten or added to.

CD-RW can be burned multiple times, can have data burned on it, additional data added to it, can have the data on it overwritten by new data and can have some or all data deleted from it.

Write protection is a security tool to prevent data being deleted unwittingly and can be applied to any device (Internal and External Hard Drives, USB Flash Drives [often called Memory Sticks or Pen Drives], Flash Memory Cards) or writable Media (writable CDs, VCDs [Video CDs], or DVDs).

The Write Protection function for writable CDs or DVDs is usually controlled in the Tools Tab of specialist software used to burn the data onto the discs (such as Nero).

If you are trying to format a burned CD-R or a Write Protection enabled CD-RW (both impossible), this would explain your "This Disc is Write Protected" error message.

If you want to delete data from a CD-RW, you do not need to format it. You can just overwrite it or delete the data from it using the Tools option in your burning software.

The much criticized, built-in CD Burning Tool in Windows is very limited in terms function and controllability. If you a fair to large amount of burning, a full, function dedicated Burning Program such as the various versions of Nero or Ashampoo Burning, would give you much more flexibility and control over your burning operations.

If you currently burn using the simple, built-in CD Burning Tool in Windows, your flexibility and control is severely limited.

I hope this helps.

how to copy anything else on finalised DVD or - to HDD on samsung HR 755

If the disk is finalized you can't normally write anything else.

The words "Finalizing" and "Closing" are used interchangeably by most recording applications. To "Finalize" or "Close" a disc means that no additional data can be written to it. This is done when the last session's lead-in is written. The option to close a disc is usually selected after all of the data that will be written has been placed in the project window, and the user knows that no more data will be added to the disc in subsequent recording sessions. The next writable address on the disc is not recorded in that lead-in, so the CD recorder, in subsequent attempts to write, has no way of knowing where to begin writing.

I cannot burn a music CD from Napster. My blank CD is a CD-R. Do I need RW?

No you do not need RW. With the CD-R you can only burn to it once. With RW you can burn to it multiple times plus erase it.

Most cd burners work with CD+R and CD-R but it is best to be sure.

Be sure to try more than one of your CD-R discs. I've brought out a new cd burner on a warranty repair in the past and found that the customers cd burner was fine and when a different CD-R was tried they were able to burn onto a cd without a problem.

DVD+RW problem

When burning CD/DVD use a lower burning method... as not to rush data to burn and make sure that before burning the let it verify or test the data burned on the CD/DVD... it takes time, but be patient, after all it is your data.
