Tip & How-To about Plumbing

Leaking shut off valve and hard to close shut off valve.

Shut off valves and gate valves have a packing nut.

When you close the valve to do some maintence on your plumbing system, and reopen the valve, alot of the time you will get a small leak from that nut. Use a crescent wrench to tighten the nut clockwise slowly, if you tighten to much you won't be able to turn handle.

Which comes to, hard to turn valves. First try to loosen nut a little bit, and then try to turn valve off. Shut off valves tend to sieze up after awhile. Always know where to locate your main water shut off. Just in case you break something or even if a pipe freezes in the winter. If you can't turn valve by hand, place channel locks around handle of vavle. Re careful not to twist and snap handle off. If you are not sure, call your plumber.

plumbing in water supply to fridge.

if this is for ice maker this is how its done. run the line through the floor in back of fridge to a cold water pipe. closest to where fridge sits.
  • Turn off the cold water supply to the pipes.
  • Attach a pipe clamp to the cold water pipe.
  • Screw a packing nut into the cold water pipe. Turn the packing nut until it punctures and taps into the pipe. Attach ΒΌ-inch copper tubing to the outlet valve on the packing nut using a compression nut. Make certain the valve is closed before you secure the packing nut.
  • Attach the copper tubing to the intake connection using a compression nut. to back of fridge,
  • Turn on the cold water supply.
  • Turn on the outlet valve on the packing nut.

  • the kit should have directions with it. good-day !

To change my bathroom sink faucet I first tried to close the valves below. The cold water one shut just fine, but the hot water valve just won't move. I used a wrench to get leverage on it, but that didn't let it budge either. I know I have to turn it clockwise to the right, just as I did with the other one. I'm female and not sure if I should really put more pressure, if I can, to close it. But I'm afraid it will break, then I'll have to use the main shut off and call a plumber. Any ideas to loosen the tight grip of the valve?

These shut-off valves don't last long before they lock up. There is always the chance that they'll break. Go ahead and turn off the main water valve, then remove the packing nut (Google images for valve packing nut). This should allow you to turn the valve stem. However, you still run the risk of not being able to get to shut off. I almost always have to replace these shut-off valves whenever replacing a faucet anyway. So, assuming the valves are threaded on to the supply pipe (not soldered) then buy replacement valves as a very first step. I am assuming you won't want to do the soldered fitting yourself. Good luck,

dishwasher does not fill with water

With the water supply ON, remove the lower panel. Place a towel or shallow container on floor to absorb water. Loosen the nut that secures the dishwasher water tubing to the inlet port of the water inlet valve. If water collects immediately in the towel or container, it can safely be assumed that the water pressure is adequate and the plumbing system is not clogged or stopped up. If little or no water collects in the container, the water line gate valve could be defective or there is a problem in the plumbing system. A qualified plumber should be called to fix the problem.
