Tip & How-To about Cell Phones
Relax, it's going to be ok!
If you have insurance on your phone, they will charge you extra to replace a water damaged phone (Asurion via Verizon charges $50!)
First things first, a little explanation. Inside you're phone is a circuit board full of electronic components, these boards don't like moisture because it allows the current from the battery to take alternate paths across the board, this can damage components.
So, your first step is to act fast! take that battery out before damage occurs! it can take anywhere from a second to an hour for the damage to occur, you can never tell because it depends on the phone, the quality of the internal components, where exactly the water got, etc.
Next, when water dries, it leaves behind residue, this may also be conductive and damage components.
The next step is a drastic measure, so it's recommended to let your phone dry with the battery out for 24 hours, and then see if it works, being careful because if it doesn't function properly right away you need to pull the battery again quickly.
If that fails get a glass the will hold your phone, and fill it with 90% or higher isopropyl alcohol, put your phone in it, and shake out the bubbles, this will clean your phone inside. When the bubbles stop take your phone out and again let it dry without the battery for 24 hours.
WARNING: putting your phone in alcohol is a last resort only and is not guaranteed to work, in most cases this will fix your water-damaged phone, but not all. Also the alcohol may make the inside of your screen cover hazy on some phones (Blackberry 8330 for sure). This is due to the material they used for the screen cover, the alcohol actually ate some of the material on the cover. The phone is still usable but the haze is just annoying. If this happens to you google search for directions to replace the screen for your phone, follow them to get the screen cover off and buff out the inside of the screen cover lightly, the haze will come out eventually.
So there you have it, good luck!
