Tip & How-To about Cameras

Canon D-SLR error 99!

Error 99 is a generic failiure that can be related to different parts of the camera. Memmory card, Shutter, Flash, Lens even humidity and temperature could be the reason. Dust and fingerprint on the contacts of the Lens, Memory card and the battery could caus the error too, so the first thing to do is wipe the contacts clean and try the camera, if that doesen't help then follow the procedure below;

To find the cause, in a place with normal/average humidity and temperature:
1. Turn off the camera!
2. Take out the battery.
3. Take out the memory card.
4. Remove the lens ( don't forget to cap the body and the lens ends! )
5. Put the camera in No Flash mode.

Now with a fully charged battery inserted, try to release the shutter(take a shot). If it is still showing the "err 99" message then the problem lays in the Body (Sutter(*), Mirror, Image Sensor, etc)(**). But if it works then:

1. wipe the contacts on the memory card and put it back in and try again if the error 99 occurs, then you have a faulty memory card or the contacts inside the memory slot are bent/crooked, look closer to make sure. if they look ok and the camera works then,
"With the memory card inserted";

2. Wipe the contacts on the lens and the camera, put the lens in manual focus mode then attatch the lens. Put the camera in Aperture priority(Av) mode. Set the aperture to the widest( the least number) and try. if it works then turn the aperture to the highest number and try again. if the error comes up, then your lens' aperture servo could be faulty (**). If you dont get the "err 99" then turn on the AF of the lens and try, if the error happens then the focus motor is the cause(**). To be sure you can test the camera with another lens. If the camera does work normally, then,
"With the lens on!";

3. In a dark place put the camera in "Auto" mode and try to release the shutter(shoot) if the flash does not pop up and it does not respond to you trying to pop up the flash manually, then your flash release mechanism is the problom(**).

These are some of the most occurring causes, there might be others. A photo store sales man told me it will cost me over $ 200 to repair my camera. My problem was the aperture servo of the lens. I hope this procedure helps you to find the problem and maybe put the money on something more necessary!

(*)Sometimes the shutter parts fall out of order. You could lift the mirror and have a look at it, if they are not parallel and even, then you may be able to push them back in order but I dont recommend it because they are very delicate and you can make them worse or even damage the image sensor behind it! So let a pro do the job!!

(**)You should let some one with expertise have a look at it but if you don't think it is worth it and you are a kind of handy man, so, have fun yourself!

Be Good!.

I keep getting error 99 message

Error 99 is common error on Canon cameras. Make sure the battery is freshly charged. Take the battery out, the compact flash card out, and the attached lens off of the camera. Leave the camera set for a while for the capacitors to bleed off. Around a half hour would be good. Next re-insert the battery and push the shutter button as if you were taking a picture. If you get an Error 99 then, you can't fix the trouble and Canon will have to do it. If you do not get an error 99, power the camera off, insert the compact flash card, power the camera back on and press the shutter button again. If you get an Error 99, the trouble is in the compact flash card or its connector. Try a different card. If you do not get an Error 99, power the camera off, a lens on it, power the camera back up, then press the shutter button once again. If you do not see an Error 99, the problem is no longer in the camera. If you do see an Error 99, power the camera off and remove the lens. The problem is probably in the contacts on the camera or the lens. Clean the contacts by holding the camera carefully with the lens opening down so it will not allow dirt to get inside the camera. Take a cotton swab dipped in alcohol and clean the gold metal contacts well, Dry the contacts with a tissue. Next hold the lens with the contacts down and repeat the process on the contacts on the lens. Be very cautious not to allow lint, dust, or alcohol to get into the camera body or into the lens. Some people use a pencil eraser to clean the contacts but you have be very careful not to let particles enter the camera or lens. This should clear your trouble, if the camera passed the first step of troubleshooting.

I'm getting a error message that says, "ERR 99".

Welcome to Fixya
Err 99 could mean several different things, such as... Memory Card, Lens or Lens contacts....

Here's what you can try:
Remove the memory card an enable "shooting with out memory card" and see if you still get the error. If it works your memory card is bad. Try another lens if you can. Clean the lens contacts with a pencil eraser (be careful not to get eraser dust in the camera body or in the lens). Worst case scenario is, Err 99 could be related to the shutter failing which would mean a trip to Canon.

Thanks

My name is Madhu. I use the camera Canon EOS 400D / Digital Rebel XTi. When the inbuilt FLASH is on then a message pop up as "busy now", when i tried to click the camera to take a photo then the message "error 99" appears. And they say to off the camera then the message of "error 99" disapperars. With out flash the camera will work. But when we again on the flash then the message reappears as "Error 99" and the camera wont work.

My Canon 40D suddenly came down with the dreaded Error 99 for no apparent reason. I have tried all the usual, battery, memory card, lens, but no luck. Even on the bulb setting the shutter won't stay open. It clicks as if taking a photo but then the error message appears. Is it a job for Canon? Thanks Trevor Lx
