Twitter Over Capacity Error
June 14, 2010

Have you been seeing the Twitter Is Over Capacity screen alot recently?
Have you wondered what the Twitter Over Capacity error means?

Generally you will see the Twitter Whale when either trying to login to Twitter or to tweet via web using an auto-logged-in browser instance.

The Twitter Is Over Capacity screen generally means that Twitter's network of computers is not able to respond to your request. This could be due to:

  • A Denial of Service (DOS) attack against Twitter. This means that so many computers have been set to repeatedly access twitter as fast as they can, that the Twitter network computers can simply not keep up to the volume of demand.
  • System Maintenance. Infrastructure improvement can warrant temporarily disabling services for network administration.
You can review Twitter's status at the Twitter Status Page.

Just because you cannot login to Twitter, or post from their webpage, does not mean you cannot still use google to search tweets for you. Nor does it mean you cannot still post new tweets and twitter status updates via sms messaging or via API for example.

I hope that helps.
