Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet
There are many visitors to the FixYa site asking for serial numbers to various software/operating systems. Before we tackle the problem of serial numbers let us understand the mechanism of selling a SW/OS. The aim of writing any software is to provide those facilities to the customers in return of some money. Earlier many companies wrote and sold some copies of their software and the user made copies of it and distributed to his/her friend etc, thus causing a huge loss to the company producing that SW. Then the companies got wiser/smarter and started giving a unique 16 to 25 digit number to each of its copies and when the user tried to install the SW it asked for that serial number. If the number supplied was correct then it got installed else the user got stuck.
This is where some of the visitors to FixYa are. They have got the copy of the SW from somewhere but minus the serial number. Now let us assume that I have my copy of that SW and give my serial number to you. When you supply this number to the installation process, it will not be accepted as it is different to what is hidden in the SW that you have. So, you would not be able to install the SW.
Only legal way out is to buy your copy of the SW so that not only you are out of the legal tangle and are able to use the SW but also the company producing it is benefited.
Alternatively, you can search for free OS/SW on the net that also do the same thing as the paid ones only a little less. In all categories you will find free SW doing the same thing. Using them is just as easy as the popular ones. Some of the examples are given below:-
1. Operating System. There are very many OS available free on the net. Just download and start using then free. In lieu of MS Windows you can very many versions of Linux and start using.
2. Office Suites. There are not only free suite for your PC/laptop but online suite as well are available. There is Open Office from www.openoffice.org, which is as powerful as MS Office Suite. As regards online suites are concerned try www.docs.google.com and www.zoho.com.
3. Anti Virus. Go to www.download.com and you can download free AVG, Avista, Avira and more. These are free as well as paid. Even the free versions are good enough for most of us. I have been using free version of AVG on three of my laptops and PCs and have had no problem.
Just go to download.com and select all the SW that you need, free or on trial.
