Tip & How-To about Office Equipment & Supplies

Black lines when sending faxes or making copies

I've been getting many calls asking me why their fax/copiers/printers are getting black lines when they send faxes and making copies while using the automatic document feeder, and not when they open the document feeder and use the glass.

What happens, when you fax or copy papers that has white-out or some material that can flake off, it gets embedded on the ADF glass and the unit thinks its part of the paper.

99% of the time, what needs to be done is to clean the small glass, usually using fingernails to scratch off the dirt, or using a lint free cloth slightly moistened, should do the trick. Just go over it several times until it comes off.

If the lines are thick, it usually indicates a damaged scanner assembly, in cases with the Brother machines, not expensive to fix. With other units, its a different story, either because they do not sell the scanner assembly as a part, or units are sent in for whole unit repairs.

Be sure to turn off the power and unplug the power cord before cleaning the machine.

  • The power cannot be turned off while the machine is sending or receiving a fax, or when the received fax or unsent fax are stored in the machine's memory. Make sure if the machine completed sending or receiving all the faxes before disconnecting the power cord.

How do you load a lexmark X5650 all in one printer, copy, photo, scan, and fax? I am trying to figure out how to load the fax to send the fax to someone.

Sending a fax using the printer control panel:
  1. Make sure the printer is on and is connected to a working phone line.
  2. Load an original document faceup into the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) or facedown on the
    scanner glass.
  3. From the printer control panel, press the Fax button.
  4. Enter a fax number, or press Address Book to select a number from the Speed Dial or Group Dial list.
  5. Press Color or Black to select a color or black-and-white fax.
  6. Press Start to send the fax job.

on sending a fax the receiver copy has a black

You must clean the glass strip that the origional passes over to be scanned. You may have White-Out or an Ink smuge on it. Another way to determine if it is your FAX is to put in an original and make a copy. If the line is on your copy than it is your scanner **** (glass).
