Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

How to use antivirus safely to protect your system?

You should first store your Anti Virus(AV) program in a CD/DVD (pen drive not recommended) and while storing it you must use a 100% virus free PC or you use the CD you got while you purchased AV. You should install AV while your system is virus free and at that time no worm will damage your AV program (as at the installation time your AV does not work so existing virus in your system can attack your AV and it will not work later). Always activate your AV through internet. You must update the program or it will not work properly (after updation you will find your AV will catch more viruses from your system)

Unfortunately, once a computer is infected with a virus of some sort it may prevent the installation of any antivirus or antimalware software. I suggest you download and try to install the free version of Malwarebytes and perform an initial scan to see what it finds. I would then install the free version of Avira or AVG antivirus (one but not both) and run scans. If neither of these steps finds and eliminates the problem you can attempt to run System Restore (WindowsXP or higher only) and restore the system back to a time prior to when you noticed the virus. If you cannot remove the virus with any of these methods you will most likely need to backup your data, format your hard disk and reinstall the operating system.

If you have tried all the various AV Removal Tools to look for expired/leftover remnants of other AVs, I\'d suggest scanning your System for Malware.

Malware will often stop you downloading Security Products.

Download, install, update and scan with each of the two programs below to check for/remove Malware/spyware.

If necessary, do all the above work in Safe Mode with Networking.

To get into Safe Mode with Networking, tap F8 right at Power On / Startup, and use UP arrow key to get to Safe Mode with Networking from list of options, then hit ENTER.

I just got a Dell Inspiron 4150 laptop from a family member (his old one) and can't seem to get the cd/dvd drive to open. Also, noticed that the cd/dvd drive does not show up as a separate drive letter in "my computer". The battery will need to be replaced due to not holding a charge. I want to add a virus protection and can't get the CD into the drive to install it. Any suggestions?

Hi,

You can try the steps below and this should fix the issue.

Edit the registry:-
1. Click Start, and click Run.
2. Type regedit in the Open box, and click OK.
3. In Registry Editor, click the plus (+) sign next to each folder name to expand the following registry path:
4. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
5. Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
6. In the right pane, right-click Upper Filters, and click Delete.
7. Click yes when prompted to delete the registry value.
8. In the right pane, right-click Lower Filters, and click Delete.
9. Click yes again.
10.Close the window and restart the computer

Please do not forget to rate the solution.
