How to remove the battery from a laptop computer

There are many times you may have to remove your laptop's battery, for example if it goes dead or if you are taking the computer apart to work on it. Some people just take the battery out when running on AC power in order to make the battery last longer.

Every laptop is different, but in general removing the battery is a simple process. First you have to power down your computer and remove it from an external power source (AV adapter or car charger) if it is connected to one.

Next, flip the laptop over so you are looking at the bottom. The battery compartment is usually located along one side, and it should have some sort of battery icon on it (like a rectangle with a lightning bolt in it). There will probably be a tab along one side that you have to push in to get the battery to pop out. Most of the time, if you push in on the tab, the battery will come right out.

If the battery won't come out when you push the tab, there may be a screw securing it. Look for a small Phillips head screw on the battery cover -- if you see a screw, remove it but don't lose it. Now the battery should come out easily.

While you have the battery out, you can clean the contacts (on both the battery and the laptop) with either a dry lint-free cloth or a can of compressed air. Dust tends to build up inside laptops and it can cause weird problems sometimes.

When you reinstall the battery, make sure it locks into place, and don't forget to put the screw back in if it had one. You don't want the battery popping out at a bad time and shutting your computer down.

The current CMOS battery is soldered onto the motherboard under the keyboard - you need to have soldering skills to remove and replace the battery or take the computer to someone who can do it for you. Be careful who you ask - that is a collector's item!

yellow led blink 8 times compaq m700

Hi,

I'm not understanding what the problem is. If the battery is dead, and you remove it, how do you expect it to recharge? Why would you remove it? So, you take it out and nothing happens. So? What were you expecting to happen?

Before you do anything more, read the documentation that came with your laptop to learn how to care for your battery. The amber light usually blinks with the battery is running low. When you plug in the A/C adapter, the light usually becomes steady to indicate the battery is charging. At tleast until you remove it.

Hope this helps. Please rate this repsonse

laptop battery light won't stay on

The battery might be dead. Batteries only have a useful life and after that they have to be replaced.

Does your laptop work ok off the AC Adapter Power Cord? If so, your battery is dead and your power cord is good. If the laptop does not work off the Power Cord then either your Power Cord is bad or the DC Power Jack where the power cord plugs into the laptop is bad. In either case a good battery will not charge if the power cord or the DC Jack is bad.

Check your DC Power Jack which is where the power cord plugs into the compute. Take an ink pen and push the tip inside the jack and see if the little pin wiggles, if so the jack is bad. You'll have to take the laptop apart to fix it. Most times it is soldered onto the motherboard, so you will have to desolder the old and solder a new one.

my laptop has a bios password which preventing me from changing my corrupt window

You have two options:
1. You could take apart the laptop and remove the bios battery
2. You could remove the battery and let the internal battery die (this could take a long time)
Once that battery is dead, your bios settings will not be saved
