Wireless - Limited or no Connectivity

Hardware works but wireless doesn't and you’re getting the limited or no connectivity error.
Please note: This document assumes that you have checked that the wireless NIC is turned on and that the Wireless Service and DHCP Service have been checked and that they are both enabled on the notebook and the services are running.
If you’re unsure about the services do the following:
1. Start > Run > ‘services.msc’
2. Search for DHCP Client in the services list. The Status should be Started and the Startup Type should be Automatic. If not, right click on the service choose properties and fix the Startup Type to Automatic. Click OK to close the window.
3. Search for Wireless Zero Configurations. The Status should be Started and the Startup Type should be Automatic. If not, right click on the service choose properties and fix the Startup Type to Automatic. Click OK to close the window.
4. Close the window
5. If you had to restart any of the services, reboot the computer.
1. Update wireless driver
Boot the computer into safe mode with networking.
Hardwire the notebook to the cable/DSL modem,
Uninstall the drivers and utilities for their wireless card.
Customer should go to the manufacturer's website and download the latest wireless driver revision for their notebook.
Install the latest driver.
Shut down the computer and unplug the LAN connection.
Reconnect the router and modem.
Wait for router and modem to sync.
Boot the computer again.
Test the connection.
If the connection fails go to step 2.
If the connection works resolved.
2. Winsocks fix
Start > Run > ‘cmd’ enter
Type in the following:
netsh winsock reset
Computer should need to be rebooted
Test computer after reboot
If the connection fails go to step 3.
If the connection works resolved.
3. Power cycle the router
Unplug the router and let it sit for 30 sec.
Power down the notebook.
Plug the router back in and wait for all the lights to stabilize
Reboot the computer.
After the computer makes it to the desktop test the connection.
If the connection fails go to step 4.
If the connection works resolved.
4. Confirm that the connection is set to b or g (depending on router)
Start > Right Click ‘My Computer’ > Manage > Device Management > Network Connections > Right Click on the Wireless NIC > Properties > Advanced Tab
Click on Wireless Mode under property
Make sure that it is 802.11g or 802.11b depending on the router.
If the connection fails go to step 5.
If the connection works resolved.
5. Move the notebook closer to the router (within 3 feet or less).
In some cases the antennae may be damaged or disconnected from the Wireless NIC.
Verify that the wireless antennae are connected to the wireless card by going under the panel and looking for them.
If the connection fails go to step 6.
If the connection works resolved.
6. Check for encryption
If encryption is there can it be cleared?
Y. Clear settings
Hard reset the router (usually involves holding down the hard reset button for 30 sec and having the router go back to default settings).
Disable encryption keys on the notebook.
If the connection fails go to step 7.
If the connection works resolved.
N. Do following
Hard reset to factory default (to clear any configuration setting that the customer may have set up).
Insert the WEP/WPA key using generic setup (on connections)
If the connection works resolved.
If the connection fails - go to advanced setup
Advanced Setup:
Go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Right Click on Wireless > Properties > Wireless Networks > Click on //Network Name// > Properties
Select WPA-PSK
Set Data Encryption to TKIP (if not already selected)
Enter Network Key (confirm case of letters)*
Confirm the key
Click OK
*Note: copy and paste does not always work … type the key in manually!!! (garbage characters can exist in a copy and paste or spaces may appear!!!)
Test the connection:
If the connection fails go to step 7.
If the connection works resolved.
7. Mac Filtering
Hard wire the notebook and verify that MAC filtering is not enabled on the router.
If it is disable the filters and test the connection.
If the connection fails go to step 8.
If the connection works resolved.
8. Verify Channels
Start > Right Click ‘My Computer’ > Manage > Device Management > Network Connections > Right Click on the Wireless NIC > Properties > Advanced Tab
Under Property choose Channel
Make sure that the Channel is the same as on the router.
If unsure:
Connect via LAN to the router and look up the channel that it is using.
If the connection fails go to step 9.
If the connection works resolved.
9. Disable Firewalls
Check to make sure that the firewalls are disabled. In some cases these can interfere with connections being made to the router.
Start > Run > MSCONFIG
Disable all startup items
Reboot the computer
Test the connection.
If the connection fails:
Uninstall all firewall software and disable the XP firewall.
If the connection works resolved.
10. Router firmware update
Conference in router manufacturer and explain the issue and tell them WHY an update is necessary (no communication between router and notebook).

Hmmm - are you able to connect to other networks? are you getting a "no connectivity" message? Is wireless not showing at all? If the latter, have you tried checking that wireless is enabled? You may have accidently turned it off by hitting F2 key - can be put back on by hitting F2 again or through EEE PC Tray utility. If you are getting a "no connectivity" message or "limited connectivity", you can try shutting off the wireless and then putting it back on to force your netbook to search for the network again. If that doesn't work,try running the wireless network connection utility (I'm assuming you have Windows XP - if not, please let us all know) - open "Control Panel", click on "Network Connections", status of "Wireless Network Connection" should be "enabled" or "connected". If not, right click on "Wireless Network Connection" and choose "Repair". If that doesn't work, double click on "Wireless Network Connection" again to open the Wireless connection status window - the general tab lists status, network, duration, speed signal strenght, etc. - make a note of what it says here as you may need to post this info for more help. You can close this window. Now yet again right click on "Wireless Network Connection" and choose "Properties" to open another popup window - in the window, click on the "Wireless Networks" tab. The box next to "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" should be checked. Your home network should be listed in the Preferred networks window - select it and click "Properties" and check that the correct information is entered for your home network (did you change anything recently? Password aka network key, encryption settings, network name - if so you have to reflect those changes here). If your home network is NOT listed, you need to create it. Click OK to save any changes you make, exit out of all the menus, then (if necessary) use F2 to disable and re-enable your wireless to force your netbook to look for the connection again. If this doesn't work, go to Device Manager (open Control Panel, click on System, click on Hardware tab, click on Device Manager). In Device Manager, scroll down to Network adapters - if there is a yellow triangle with an exclamation point next to your 802.11n Wireless LAN Card, then you have some sort of device conflict or driver issue - is there an error message? If there is no yellow triangle and no error message, then you can exit Device Manager. If you are getting an error message or yellow triangle, try and fix this issue by reinstalling the correct driver from Asus or fixing the conflict - right click on 802.11n Wireless LAN Card and choose "update driver" if you need to do that (you will have to download the correct driver using another machine and copy it onto your netbook first) - otherwise choose "Properties" to troubleshoot. If there is a yellow triangle and/or an error message and you cannot get it fixed, it might be a good idea to make a note of error messages and details of what you tried so you can post them here to assist people in helping you.

If there was nothing wrong in the device manager, or if none of the above worked, it is possible that you have a malware infestation that damaged your winsock. In that case you can download Winsock XP Fix from Snapfiles or Cnet (from another computer), copy it onto your netbook and run it. If that fixes your problem, you may have malware issues and should do a virsucan (if you do not have an antivirus installed, get Avira free which is awesome) - I would also strongly suggest you download the free versions of Malwarebytes, Superantispyware and Emsi's A2free usb and run them to clean your system.

If none of the above works, then as a last resort you could back up all your data onto disk or an external drive and then use the Asus restore function to set your netbook back to factory default. You would have to reinstall all your software and reconfigure your netbook and copy all your data back - but at least hopefully your wifi would be working! If restoring to factory default did not fix your problem, then you almost certainly have a hardware failure.

My wireless wont work on my presario v6000 what should i do.


Check the wireless settings of the router .
Is there any other computer online wireless ?
If yes then the router must be working. check the settings of the computer.
Do you get any error message when you try to connect to the network ?

it shows me always limited connectivity


First try to determine whether you can connect to the Internet loadTOCNode(2, 'workaround'); You should first try to determine whether you can connect to the Internet. If you can connect, the error message is obviously incorrect. If that is the case, you might want to disable the error message. To disable the error message, follow these steps.
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type ncpa.cpl, and then press ENTER. The Network Connections dialog box opens.
  3. Double-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
  4. On the General tab, click to clear the Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity check box.
  5. Click OK, and then click Close.

Check for other causes and solutions loadTOCNode(2, 'workaround'); If you cannot connect to the Internet, you have to find the reason. Realize that the reason may not be with your computer, but may be an issue with your Internet service provider (ISP) or with issues on the network at your work. Therefore, for some of these solutions, you might need help from your ISP, or, if your computer is part of a network at work, you may have to ask your network administrator for help. Contact your ISP service loadTOCNode(3, 'workaround'); If you use an ISP to connect to the Internet, before you go any further, first contact your ISP to see whether it is experiencing any problems. If the ISP has problems, wait until the problems are resolved before you continue to troubleshoot. Check the hardware devices loadTOCNode(3, 'workaround'); If you still cannot connect to the Internet after you have confirmation that your ISP is not experiencing any problems, manually check the hardware devices on your small office network or your home network for problems. For example, your computer may not have an IP address or your TCP/IP settings may be corrupted.

There are tools available in Windows XP that you can use to help you diagnose and troubleshoot networking problems. To use the Network Diagnostics tool to determine the source of the issue, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Help and Support.
  2. Under Pick a task, click the link to Use Tools to view your computer information and diagnose problems, and then click Network Diagnostics in the list on the left.
  3. Click Scan your system. The Network Diagnostics tool collects configuration information and performs automated troubleshooting of the network connection.
  4. When the process is complete, look for any items that are marked "FAILED" in red.

    Note If you do not see any categories that failed, please see the "Additional troubleshooting information" section for more information about how to troubleshoot network problems.
  5. Expand a category to view the testing results. For example, to check the results for TCP/IP settings, expand the Network Adapters section. Then, check whether a network adapter has failed.
  6. You can use that information to try to resolve the issue yourself, or you can provide the information to your network administrator for help. If you are not sure how to use the results from the Network Diagnostics tool to resolve the issue, see the "Next steps" section for help.
