Tip & How-To about Plumbing

How to rebuild a single handle detla faucet.

If you have to draw a diagram of the faucet and how you disassembled it.

Step 1- Shut off water supply to your faucet.

Step 2- Use 1/8" allen wrench to remove handle from faucet.

Step 3- Next it has a retaining ring to loosen, they make a little spanner wrench to fit this in all complete rebuid kits. And then you are ready to loosen the collar.
To do this would be best to have a tool to grip the collar and not do damage to it. Some hardware stores carry rubber slip on's to fit on chanel locks pliers to avoid marking. Or if you have access to a strap wrench that will work.

Step 4- After collar removed, remove plastic cap and washer and ball. Seats and springs are located in valve bottom. Remove seats and springs with a small screw driver.

Step 5- Pull up spout to remove it to replace the o ring's on shaft. Also if it has a sprayer the diverter is in the base near the bottom. A little round brass diverter for sprayer.

Step 6-Install o rings for spout on base and diverter for sprayer if it has one. Plumbers grease will make install of spout easier to go back onto base. Now you can reinstall spout back onto base .

Step 7- Install new seat's and spring's with a small screw driver. Line screw driver to port and let spring and washer slide into place and press it gradually into place to seat in.

Step 8- Install new ball and notice that it has a groove in it to line up in valve.

Step 9- Install washer and plastic cap with slot in proper space.

Step 10- Install cap and tighten and adjust retaining ring to tighten up movement from spout from side to side. At this point you can turn water back on to make sure you have no leaks before tighting handle in place.

Step 11- Install handle and you're in business, and have rebuilt your very first faucet with knowledge to tackle the next plumbing project.

Dripping bath faucet circa 1985. Can't ID model but appears to have 2 screws holding front of casting to main body for disassembly . Faceplate is square in shape and black in color HELP!

  • 1 Close the hot and cold water valves in the cabinet beneath the sink to shut the water supply off to the bath faucet.
  • 2 Remove the bath faucet's handle to access the valve cartridge. The faucet handle is removed by first detaching the handle's insert cap using the tip of a screwdriver or utility knife to expose the handle screw. Remove the handle screw with a Phillips screwdriver, then pull the handle off the valve cartridge stem.
  • 3 Loosen and remove the cartridge valve nut with an adjustable wrench. Some faucet models retain the valve cartridge with a snap ring and are removed with snap ring pliers.
  • 4 Pull the old valve cartridge out of the bath faucet base, using pliers.
  • 5 Insert the new replacement valve cartridge into the faucet housing and replace the nut or snap ring removed in Step 3, using an adjustable wrench or snap ring pliers.
  • 6 Reinstall the faucet's handle onto the valve cartridge post, then secure the handle's screw, using a screwdriver.
  • 7 Replace the insert cap into the handle to cover the handle's screw hole.
  • 8 Turn on the hot and cold water valves beneath the sink to restore the water supply.

Grohe pull out kitchen faucet will not swivel.

Turn off the water supplies . Disassemble the unit until you can lift the spout up and off of the base unit.Replace "O" rings and lube well with a good heat/water resistant grease. (PLUMBERS GREASE) sold at hardware stores. Carefully reinstall back the opposite the way it was disassembled. Lube all moving parts where contact is made during reassembly. Its easy it should not be a problem for you to do with simple tools (Allen wrench) and confidence.Check to make sure the "O" rings are in good shape and replace if necessary

Greetings! My Kohler kitchen faucet model K-10416 with sprayer (16 months in use) is making noise when water is turned on in both hot and cold positions. Also, when sprayer is used water flow is not being completely shut-off thru faucet. I believe problem lies with the diverter. Does complete faucet assembly need to be removed to access the diverter valve? Schematic is not clear. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Begin by shutting off the water to the faucet. Then, on the back of the handle you will find a small button. remove it with a small knife blade and underneath you will see a 1/8" set screw. Use a 1/8" inch allen wrench to remove the set screw. You can then unscrew the bonnet and remove the diverter. Take the diverter to a hardware store or plumbing supply to purchase the appropriate repair kit. goodluck.
