Tip & How-To about Cycling

Slicks, Semi-Slick OR Knobbly Tyres, Oh what do I use for my MTB !

A SLICK TREAD MEANS THE TYRES ROLL BETTER ON THE ROAD

A SEMI SLICK TREAD MEANS THE TYRES ROLL WELL ON THE ROAD, BUT CAN ALSO BE USED FOR LIGHT OFF-ROADING, A COMBINATION OF SLICK ACROSS THE CENTRE KNOBBLY ON THE EDGES

A KNOBBLY TREAD MEANS THE TYRES ROLL BEST FOR OFF-ROADING THIS IS A STANDARD MTB TYRE, AND GIVES THE BEST TRACTION IN THE MUD.

THERE ARE TYRES THAT CAN FOLD FOR EASY STORAGE AND REPLACEMENT IF YOU HAVE A BLOWOUT AND ONES THAT DON'T THAT WILL LAT LONGER DUE TO INCREASED WALL THICKNESS IT ALL DEPENDS UPON THE USE.

FOR THE ALLROUNDER THE STANDARD NON-FOLDABLE SEMI-SLICK MAYBE THE BEST OPTION

My 1998 astrovan is very loud driving over bumps, potholes, and road imperfections. 4 "brand new" used tires but still haven't gotten an alignment. Air pressure is all the same.

are you talking road noise from the tyres
or exhaust or suspension noises

used tyres matching for noise ...
depends on tread pattern and how much thread
what year they were made

tyre pressure ...sure check all are to spec

pre inspection before any wheel alignment
should will be checking the suspension condition

Humming noise at 80kph at rear, would worn spring bushes cause this

unlikely--- humming noise is from a vibration caused by failing drive line joints , bearing failures, out of balance drive shafts , failing rear engine mounts, worn slip joints, worn output shaft bush in the transmission housing
it can also be from bad tyres or tyres with a regular tyre pattern in the tread
To understand this you have to closely inspect the tread pattern of tyres and you will see that the pattern is not consistent around the tyre as that consistency is what gives a noise ( example is the old bar tread tyre and the road hum that was produced on hard surface roads)

I had two used tires put on the front of my 2000olds bravada and now the service awd light is on,did they mess something up.

If the tire diameter is different from the rear

Used tires will be worn & smaller

If that is AWD--- it won't work, need 4 tires the same

Same brand, same tread, same amount of wear (dia)

They also could have caused a problem with sloppy work

VW Passat Estate on Alloy wheels with 235/45/ZR17 tyres. want to find winter tyre suitable for 16 inch steel rim for same vehicle. Steel rim is marked 61x2JX16H2

okay, 235 is the tread width 45 is the profile(the distance from the wheel to the road)ZR is the speed rating(over 120mph)17 is the wheel diameter.so to get the same tread width 225 would fit(cheaper than 235)45 needs to be thicker cos of 16" not 17" wheels and 1"=25.4mm 75 would be the choice.because winter tyres are designed for speeds less than 70mph "R" would be suitable.
all together 225/ 75(or 85) R 16.....SNOW TYRE/WINTER TREAD.
PLEASE LEAVE FEED BACK.

is it normal for my tires to hum in my 2007 impreza wagon? sounds like i have a rice burner sometimes, but only from the cockpit!

If they are all terain or off road tyre's then it's normal if it has road tyre's then it would be best to get it checked wheel bearings and brakes.
