Tecumseh engine surge/hunt fix

10 hp HM100 on a generator. hunting and surging since new. called for a J17 plug. install a J19 (hotter plug) to fix.
The J17 cannot keep the combustion chamber hot enough for a complete burn so it might seem like a carb problem (fuel starvation).

Coleman 5000 watt generator Tecumseh 10 hp engine. Surging r.p.m. Carburetor has been gone through 2 times, and still not correct. Any information will help!!!

it's running lean.....try resetting the choke partially when it begins to surge.....not completely closed, but enough to richen the fuel mixture (that's all a choke does btw..)
if that helps or clears the problem, your carb is outta whack.....cheaper to buy a new carb than keep taking back into the shop.

I have a tecumiseh 10 hp model hm100 that will not start. i have changed plugs, cleaned the carb, and ev eninstalled new coil. But still will not start, What is its problem? It is installed in a coleman 6250 generator.

Pull the starter rope and observe the ON/OFF switch. Does it flash as the engine spins? If so, you have found the problem! The flashing light in the switch indicates the engine oil is low. Add engine oil as needed to reset the AUTO-SHUTDOWN feature and it will run again. (If everything else is healthy.)

If this does not resolve the issue, reply to this post using the "Add Comments" option and we can further diagnose it.

Hope this helps,
Dolf-

Coleman Powermate 10 HP Generator shuts down after a few minutes.

I have an HM100 on a 5500 watt gen with the same problem. This motor calls for a J17 spark plug, but I found using a J19 (hotter) plug solved the problem. I think the J17 doesn't get hot enough for a complete combustion burn so it act like fuel starvation thus resulting in the black sooty and wet plug.
