Tip & How-To about Video Game Consoles & Games
For those who are replacing a PS3 Laser, particularly the KEM-400AAA or
KES-400A (these are the same laser, one just has the deck included) you
will often see online that there are refurbished “white clip” lasers
that have a high failure and “brand new” brown clip lasers that are made
by a third party and have almost 0 failure rate.
As someone who repairs PS3s, I would like to but an end to this *MYTH*
There is **no such thing** as a BRAND NEW PS3 laser expect for those made by Sony.
Sony does not sell parts to repair the systems because they do not want customers attempting repairs themselves.
Any web site claiming to be selling NEW brown clip lasers is outright **LYING** to you.
If any third party company did make PS3 lasers they would be promptly sued by Sony.
How do I know all of this?
Well, if these THIRD PARTY lasers are new, and being third party, not made by Sony, why have I frequently opened PS3 consoles with warranty stickers intact, only to find a BROWN CLIP laser?
The answer is because Sony makes these brown clip laser as well as the white clip lasers.
The quality of the lasers depends on the care taken in refurbishing them, NOT the color of the clip.
Find a reliable source and you will be OK.
I should note that I have used both Brown clip and White clip lasers and have seen both fail. Unfortunately these products have a high failure rate, this is simply unavoidable.
Find a retailer that guarantees the item for at least 30 days or that guarantees the item is tested before being sent out. If you do get a bad laser, make sure they will refund you.
