  1. You use special torrent search engines to find .torrent text files around the Net. A .torrent text file functions as a special pointer to locate a specific file and the swarm of people currently sharing that file. These .torrent files varyfrom 15kb to 150kb file size, and are published by serious Torrent sharersaround the world.
  1. You download the desired .torrent file to your drive (thistakes about 5 seconds per .torrent file at cable modem speeds).
  1. You open the .torrent file intoyour torrent software
  1. .Usually, thisis as simple as a adouble-click on the .torrent file icon, and the client software auto-launches. In other cases, this software willeven open the torrent file for you.
  1. The torrent client software willnow talk to a tracker server for 2 to 10 minutes, whileitscours the Internet for people to swarmwith.Specifically, the client and tracker server willsearch for otheruserswho have the same exact .torrent file as you.
  1. As the tracker locates torrent users to swarmwith, each user willbeautomaticallylabeled as either a "leech/peer" or as a "seed" (userswho have only part of the target file, versus userswho have the completetarget file). As youmightguess, the more seedsyouconnect to, the fasteryour download willbe. Commonly, 10 peers/leeches and 3 seeders is a good swarm for downloading a single song/movie.
  1. The client software thenbegins the transfer. As the name "sharing" implies, everytransferwillhappen in both directions, "down" and "up" (leech and share). *SPEED EXPECTATION: Cable and DSL modem users can expect an average of 25 megabytes per hour, sometimesslowerif the swarmissmallwithlessthan 2 seeders. On a good daywith a big swarm, however, you can download a 5MB songwithin 3 minutes, and a 900MB moviewithin 60 minutes.
  1. Once the transferiscomplete, leaveyour torrent client software running for at least twohours. This iscalled "seeding" or "good karma", whereyoushareyourcomplete files to otherusers.Suggestion: do your downloads justbeforeyou go to sleep at night. This way, youwillseedyourcomplete files, youwillincreaseyourupload/download ratio, and youwill have completedownloaded files by the time you wake up!
  1. Movie and music plug-ins:youwilllikelyneed to install media players and updated codec converters to playyour downloads:
  1. Enjoyyourmovies and songs!
  1. Fair warning: youwillwant a second hard drive once you start serious torrent downloading. Songs and moviesrequire large diskspace, and an average P2P user commonly has 20 to 40 GB of media files at any one time. A second 500GB hard drive iscommon for serious P2P users, and the recentlowprices on hard drives makeit a good investment

i have a toshiba tecra m3.i tried to install windows xp media center edition????with no joy! it keeps saying install disk 2 when i install disk 2 nothing happens , i have windows on the laptop but nothing works..GGGRRRR all the drivers are missing and i carnt access the internet??how do i format my hard drive to factory settings and start again???????have temporary use of a friends laptop???

First you have to know if that Windows XP Media Center is compatible with your laptop, it should be properly installed to avoid errors.

Second if you don't have drivers, you have to access the internet so you don't have any choice but to use another computer to download all the drivers for your laptop

Here's the site for your tecra laptop

About torrent download

Torrent files tend to download slowly at first because they have to communicate with the tracker and find people that have that torrent open and have parts that you do not have yet. If you wait a few minutes the torrents will generally speed up. The speed of the torrent download also is dependent on the number of seeders (people sharing the file(s) that the torrent refers to). If there are not very many seeders then the torrent will never be fast but if there are a lot of seeders then the torrent will generally be very fast. Also many trackers are setup to throttle the downloads until you have shared a certain amount of your download.

You also should be aware that several ISPs throttle torrent downloads. If this is what is causing you downloads to be slow you are not going to be able to prevent it.
