How to install ATI Video Card Drivers for Linux / Ubuntu

For most of the linux distributions, ATI Video Card Drivers are the hardest to get working, since it is not normally included in the installation. Linux would still normally work since it has a basic VESA driver installation but it would not have any 3D effects, which is one of the things Linux users would crave to have on their system.

With the 3D effects, changing the desktop or the workspace, makes linux usage fun and exciting. To have that, we need the drivers for the video card that allows 3D Acceleration.

For ATI Video cards, here are the steps to follow to install the driver on linux.

1) Make sure that you have updated your kernel to the latest version.
2) Go to this link --> "http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx"

This is where you can download any ATI Video Card driver. Make sure to pick the right linux type because there are two items on the list to choose from either Linux x86 or x86_64. The latter part is for 64 Bit systems. Then choose your ATI Product Family like Radeon, FirePro and so on. Then choose your product from the list and click go. Download the latest driver with ATI catalyst onto a folder in your hard drive.

3) You need to go to the terminal console. On ubuntu it would be Terminal on mandriva it is KTerminal or whatever terminal you are used to. Change to the directory of the download. ( e.g. "chdir /home/myusername/Downloads")

4) To run the installation you need to be an administrator or a SuperUser. There are a couple of ways to do it and it is dependent on what distribution you are using. For ubuntu, kubuntu or any other debian type linux distributions first you need to type in "sudo" then the command or the name of the executable file or script. For example for your ati driver: "sudo ./ati-driver-installer-10-4-x86.x86_64.run ". The press enter. It may ask for a password, so you have to type it in.

For other distributions, like mandriva or redhat, you need to be a superuser or login as a super user in the terminal before you do the command or run the executable. So you first type in "su" then press enter. After that it would ask you for the password. Type it in and then press enter. Then type the command or name of executable like "./ati-driver-installer-10-4-x86.x86_64.run " then press enter.

5) After you have run the installation you will get the installation screen just make sure to just follow the steps or normally keep clicking next.

6) When you are done installing the driver make sure to restart the system.

NOTES / TIPS:
Linux normally gets updates almost every week, which would sometimes include an update of the kernel. When this happens, your ati driver would not work on reboot. On some instances, you would even just go to a black screen or it would crash and stop on the splash screen at the start of the linux boot process. For you to prevent this from happening make sure that you have a copy of the driver you installed or better yet make sure that you have an updated copy of the driver. If you are able to go into linux but found that you do not have the 3D capability. Reinstall the driver again. If you are not able to go to linux go to the repair option at the start of the boot process. From there install the Driver. Then restart the computer.

The fix starts by first doing a "deep uninstall" of all ati drivers and programs present in the affected computer computer, remember to remove al ati related programs from control panel's add remove utility, including the whole multimedia center. And finally reinstalling the new drivers.

You should have downloaded the most recent catalyst drivers from ATI that are available for your card.

Now proceed with the "deep uninstall" following this directions, taken from somewhere on the internet, thanks to the one who wrote them...

1. Go into the Control Panel and under the ADD/REMOVE SOFTWARE icon uninstall the ATI Multimedia software and/or the ATI DVD software.
2. Uninstall the ATI drivers also found in the Add/Remove section. Once removed, it will prompt you to reboot....do so.
3. When returning to windows, the NEW HARDWARE FOUND wizard will come up and will tell you that it has found a new VGA card and will prompt you for drivers. Hit CANCEL!
4. Now, go to START - SEARCH - FOR FILES OR FOLDERS and do a search for all files and folders using the filename ati*.*
This search will normally give you 3 to 4 files found in your c:/windows directory and subdirectories (including the Windows/System directory). Select these files and erase them. Now go to your Recycle Bin and Empty your bin.

5. Next...time to go to your Registry. Go to START -- RUN -- regedit
Here go to key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -- SYSTEM -- ControlSet001 -- Control -- Video . Here there should be 4 entries. 3 of them are default Windows XP entries and the 4th one is put in by the ATI drivers. Expand each one by one until you see ATI entries. Once found, erase the entire key.
Now repeat the same step above for the ControlSet002 key and the CurrentControlSet Key. Normally, whenever you erase a key in the ControlSet001, XP automatically deletes it in the CurrentControlSet section too. So if the ATI key is not found in the CurrentControlSet section, don't worry about it.
Once all keys are deleted, proceed to the next step.

6. While still in the registry, go to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -- SOFTWARE section. Here you should find an ATI Technologies key. Select it and delete it. In that same section, look for an Installed Options key. Expand it and there you should find another ATI Technologies key. Select it and erase it.
7. Still in the registry, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER -- Software and there you should find another ATI technologies key. Select it and erase it. Once all this is done, close the registry. the registry is now clean. Though you might want to even run a registry cleaner, like the one included in the freeware program CCLEANER, it's very good, can be undone and it's safe enough to use it almost blindly.
8. Close all windows and reboot.
9. When in windows after the reboot the NEW HARDWARE FOUND WIZARD will pop up again. Cancel that. Now find the new ATI drivers that you have downloaded and extracted and run the SETUP file. Once complete, reboot and you are done. You may want to reinstall your ATI MMC software and DVD software if you use them. DONE!

ATI Radeon 9600XT

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Appreciate the direct "ask Me".

Some motherboards require a separate AGP port driver to be installed before the drivers of the AGP video card could be recognized. This is specially so for 8X. Perhaps the solution requires that you install the complete motherboard drivers including the AGP port before installing the ATI 9600XT drivers.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.
