Tip & How-To about Cameras

Digital Cameras

Since I have been a expert on Fix ya, I have seen many people write about the auto-focus of the digital zoom lens. Here are a few tips and tricks that will help you in the future.

The Right Lens for the Job
There is another reason for using zoom lenses, especially when you are taking pictures of people. Lenses can alter the appearance of your subject, and wide angle lenses can distort people’s faces – especially if you are taking our advice and getting in close. So, by all means, get close, but if you are doing a portrait, use your zoom as well. Longer lenses are more complimentary and should be used even if you are actually physically close to your subject

What Brand is your SLR?
This is important because every mounting brace for all the camera's are different for example, and Nikon will not fight on a Canon, Canon will not fit on a Pentax and so forth. Some may fit, but the auto focus will not work. So make sure you know your brand and model number before just going out and buying a lens for your camera.

Here are six steps to help you buy the best lens for your money and the camera.

  1. Determine the focal length you'll need
  2. Decide if you want a prime or zoom lens
  3. Select a maximum aperture
  4. Choose between first or third party lenses
  5. Evaluate any extra features
  6. Read reviews and narrow your options

My Olympus 740 digital camera does not auto focus any more. I can make it focus for the most part by zooming in, but is there anything I can do to make it start up focused? I had another Olympus camera model a few years ago that I had to send in to Olympus 3 times for the same problem.

Take it off manual focus? There may be an "all reset" option in one of the menus that makes the camera factory default whenever its turned on, usually this is full auto mode. If the camera will only focus when the zoom is used, there may be a secondary lens inside the lens barrel that is not moving as it should. Time to service it if that is the case.

Focussing

Two possible solutions. The camera may be set to Macro. The lens may have failed. If the camera is not set to macro then the lens has to be replaced and the camera reprogrammed.

zoom problem

Ive seen this three times and everytime its been something differant. Fist was the rocker switch was jammed. easy fix as dirt was in there. Second was a small serface maounted capacitor in the zoom interface circuit. An third never found the problem as we thought it was a limit switch in the lens itself but the customer never paid for a new lens assy so we didnt order it. Good luck
