Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

Wireless Part Configuration of Belkin routers without CD

Wireless Part Configuration:

  • Connect the Computer to the Router in one of the 4 ports named wired (usually grey in color) using an Ethernet cable.
  • Open internet explorer / Firefox / chrome or any of your default web browser.
  • In the address bar type the default gateway address of Belkin router 192.168.2.1
  • Belkin router setup page (RSP) will be displayed.
Step 1: Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)
In the Belkin router Setup page, on your left hand side, you may have Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) below WIRELESS. If you have WPS then click on it. If it prompts you for a login password, leave it blank and Click on Submit.WPS will be Enabled by default. Change it to Disabled and Click on Apply Changes. It may or may not take some time to save the Information and brings you back to the same page.

Step 2: Security
Select Security found on left side of router setup page.Security mode will have the following options,
  • WPA / WPA2 (PSK)
  • 64-bit WEP
  • 128-bit WEP
  • Disabled
Usage of above security modes for various devices:
  • WPA / WPA2 (PSK) ------for vista & windows7 computers
  • 64-bit WEP -------for windows XP, MAC, XBOX, Play Stations, Ipods, Ipads (recommended)
  • 128-bit WEP ------same as 64bitwep, but not recommended
  • Disabled------to disable the wireless security
Disabled: If you think there is no need for security for your Wireless network or if you are willing to make it as a hot-spot then you can select the option as Disabled and Click on Apply Changes.

WPA/WPA2: If you are selecting the Security type as WPA/WPA2 then you will be able to see the pre-shared key (PSK) or passphrase (PSK), in this box you need to type at-least 8 characters as the network password. After typing the password you can verify the password by un-checking obscure PSK. Password is case sensitive. Once you are done check obscure PSK and Click on Apply Changes.

64bitWEP: If you are selecting the Security type as 64bitWEP then you will be able to see the Key 1 with 5 empty boxes. You need to type 2 numbers in each boxes of Key 1. You can also use letters A-F along with numbers 0-9 to make your password more secure. Password is case sensitive. After filling those details click on Apply Changes directly. You must not type anything in Passphrase and click on generate. If you do so, it will generate a password automatically. The 10digit value which you entered in key 1 is the password for your wireless network. You need to enter the same password without any spaces in between in your computer to get connected to your wireless network.

128bitWEP: If you are selecting 128bit WEP, then you need to follow the same instructions as above but you need to enter 26characters in 13 empty boxes.

Step 3: Channel and SSID:
  • Once you are done with that, select Channel and SSID found on the left side of RSP.
  • Change the Wireless Channel to 1 or 6 or 11 (these are the best non- overlapping channels for wireless networks).
  • Change the SSID to any name as you wish, this will be your wireless network name (I recommend you to use a single word of any length. It can have letters, numbers or combination of both).
  • Check whether the option Broadcast SSID is checked / enabled (it must be enabled).
  • Once you are done click on Apply Changes.
Now the Router is configured for wireless devices.

Connecting your wireless computer to the wireless network:Make sure the wireless switch is turn on in the laptop, now look for the available wireless Networks in range, select your network name, enter the security key and get connected.

How to configure netgear wireless router.
  • Connect your high-speed modem to the Netgear wireless router with an Ethernet cable. Turn off and unplug your high-speed modem's power before connecting the device to your wireless router. Plug the Ethernet cable that was connected to your high-speed modem into the "Internet" port on the back of your Netgear wireless router. This port is located next to the wireless router's power port and is designated by a green color.
  • Connect your computer and the Netgear wireless router with an Ethernet cable. Shut down your computer before connecting it to your wireless router. Plug one end of the short, blue Ethernet cable that came with your Netgear wireless router into your computer's Ethernet jack. Plug the other end of the cable into a LAN port on the back of your wireless router. Your wireless router will have several numbered LAN ports, designated by a yellow color. It does not matter which LAN port you use.
  • Turn on each device in order. First, power up your high-speed modem, then wait at least 2 minutes. This allows it time to connect to your Internet Service Provider's (ISP) server. Make sure that your high-speed modem's status indicators show that it has successfully connected to your ISP's server. Next, plug the Netgear AC power adapter into the Netgear wireless router and a power outlet. The AC power adapter plugs into the back of the wireless router in a black-colored port labeled "Power." Wait at least 2 minutes for your wireless router to connect to your high-speed modem. You will know that it has successfully connected if all of the status lights on the front of the wireless router are on. Finally, turn on your computer.
  • Open your Web browser and connect to the wireless router's URL. In the address bar of your browser, type in the wireless router's address. The Netgear wireless router addresses are: http://www.routerlogin.net, http://www.routerlogin.com or http://192.168.1.1. You can use any one of these URLs. Press "Enter" on your keyboard once you have typed in the address.
  • Input the default user name and password. The default user name is "admin," and the default password is "password." The text boxes are case-sensitive, so it is important that you use lowercase letters.
  • Follow the Setup Wizard instructions. Once you log into the router, a Setup Wizard will load and ask if you want it to detect your Internet type. Click the "Yes" radio button, then click "Next." Once you have completed the wizard, configuration is complete, and you can access the Internet using the wireless router.
  • Configure wireless settings. If you have wireless devices that you want to connect to your Netgear wireless router, you must access your wireless settings. Log into the wireless router as described in Steps 4 and 5, then find and click the "Wireless Setting" link on the main menu. You can change the default SSID (wireless network name) from "NETGEAR" to a custom name, and you can change security settings such that a passcode is required to log onto your wireless network. When you finish changing your wireless settings, click "Apply." You must use this SSID and passcode to connect your wireless devices to your Netgear wireless router.

Want to connect aDI-604UP wired router to a DIR-615 wireless router to use as a printer port wirelessly

Hello Richard.

For this, you have two types of connection
1. LAN_LAN (ethernet to ethernet) -->wireless router is acting as a switch
2. LAN_WAN (ethernet to internet)-->wireless router is acting as a wireless router

in this case, you need the LAN_LAN connection

Physical connection:
plug an ethernet cable from the ethernet port on the wired router and connect the other end of that cabl to the ethernet port on the wireless router

Configuration:
log-on to the setup page of the wireless router, do this while the wired router is turned off.
-open your internet browser, type 192.168.0.1 on the address bar. Then type the username & password for the router ( default admin as the username, password : ).
Under the setup tab, click manual configuration. Then click network settings, change the router ip address to 192.168.0.5 & disable the DHCP server. save the settings. Just personalize the wireless network.

Hope this helps.

security code: I have someone accessing my wireless network and want to security code it.

Right, it is quite simple really, simply open your browser, and login to the router, using login and password, once in the router select security, and generate a WAP/WEP "Key" (now copy paste this, huge 64 bit or 32 bit hex, to a note pad document and save it to the desktop, for later pasting into the WiFi Network itself.) Now once you have generated and set the password Key, save the configuration and reboot the router, and then, the PC, after the PC comes back up, Go to "Connect to a network" and select your SSID, (The name of your WiFi Router's connection), you will be asked for the WEP/WAP "Key" you can then copy.paste from that notepad document, into the password/Key "Field" and proceed, ensure you check, "Remember password".
