I'm just getting started with gardening. What basic tools should i buy?

Basic set of good quality hand tools. Two shovels. One could have a narrow one with a ruler if you want to measure depth. I use a mallet a lot to pound stakes and fence posts. And a broader one for everything else. The fork is one I rarely use. That's it. There are a lot of hand tools but that is all I use. Other tools: spade, standard rake, 18 inch rake, manual tiller, pitch fork.

Each time my coworker tries to press any button it calls another extension in the office.

Sounds like a stuck button...

Look for the individual that the telephone set keeps calling and see if the button is depressed a little.

You can unplug the phone, and do what I call the rake, rake over the buttons, looking for any buttons that are pinched on the corners.

You may have to take to button off that is causing the issue, and clean it if it is sticking if the rake does not fix it.
