Tip & How-To about Cameras

Why did my digital camera fail?

There are hundreds of small digital cameras people are trying to sell "AS-IS" or "for parts" in the ads, and many on here asking why my camera won't turn on, or what does it mean when it says lens error, or it says please turn off and on again. Why is this happening, and what is happening? Are they just cheap junk to be avoided, or is there something else going on? Read on,, as this is my experience;

These small digital cameras are amazingly tough if kept clean, they are also very sensitive to the three "D’s" ; Dirt, Drops, & Drips. - Most are not sealed against grit or water, and are breakable if dropped.

Explanation; There has to be a small gap between the case and the lens in order for the tiny electric motor to extend and adjust the lens, dust and sand gets in here, and hair, etc. and jams between the tiny plastic gears and sliding pieces, when they jam, the camera senses something is not right and gives an error message, sometimes just restarting it clears the object, but unfortunately once something gets jammed to the point where it won't work, it is probably firmly imbedded in a gear or other part and is not likely to just fall out. In disassembling these, there is usually a little pile of grit that comes out, I have cleaned several, but recommend replacing the lens due to the near impossible task of making sure there is no more grit in there, then cleaning out the rest of the insides before reassembly. (best done by a professional, usually costing over $100.00)

Conclusion; If you try to keep your camera out of any area where it could collect dust of grit, like pockets and purses, but keep it in a camera bag that closes tight, then put in your pocket or purse, or hang it on your shoulder, it will last much longer. Hope this helps

THE BATTERY DOOR IN A NIKON COOLPIX L24 WONT CLOSE

This is a clear design flaw. There are hundreds of similar incidents. Just try searching for "Coolpix L22 battery door" Nikon refused even to sell me a replacement door, and asked me to send the whole camera to them for evaluation. Dozens of sellers on ebay and ali-express are selling the replacement door, but not Nikon-USA. They do not sell it. So beware when working with Nikon that they do not stand behind their products.

lens stuck in the extended position

i don't think the lens mechanism can be repaired, it may need to be replaced, usually for about 50% of what you bought the camera for. there is a company in new york that carries parts for small digital consumer cameras like this : Camera Repair NYC

Lens stuck/lens error

Hello

there are tiny plastic gears inside and may have chipped or a small piece of sand got in causing the lens to jamb. "very fragile"

one solution is to ask a camera repair shop how much a lens mechanism would be to replace. (if cost is more than 1/2 of what you paid dont bother)

another solution is to have someone sell your camera on an auction site for parts, to make some money towards another camera purchase
