Tip & How-To about Maytag Neptune MDE4000 Electric Dryer

Maytag Square-Front (1998) and Sloped-Front (1999) Dryers Front Panel and Top Cover Removal

Most of the internal components of Maytag Square-Front (1998) and Sloped-Front (1999) Dryers can be accessed with the removal of the front panel and lifting of the top cover. The top cover can only be lifted after the front panel is removed. Make sure that power to the machine is disconnected prior to servicing to avoid the risk of electric shock.

The first step is the removal of the four screws located vertically along the inside lip of the door opening. These screws hold the front panel to the front shroud assembly. Once the four screws are removed, grasp and press in on the upper edges of the front panel posts then twist it inward to release the clips holding it to the cabinet. Tilt the top of the front panel and move it away from the dryer.

The top cover is held on each side of the cabinet by hold down brackets. Locate and remove the 5/16" hex-head screws holding each bracket then swing the bracket to the outside and unhook it from the slot in the top cover lip. Open the door then lift the front of the top cover and tilt it toward the rear of the dryer.

The internal components of the dryer can now be accessed. Reinstall the top cover and the front panel in reverse of the removal steps.

This procedure is also applicable to Maytag Neptune Front-Load Washers. The only difference is the dispenser bezel removal.

wont get hot

You might think your heating element number 5 is bad but it could be number 11 or even number 8. Any component in or arounf the heat chamber can be the culprit. This is the famous slopefront dryer (circa 1999). It looks purty. To access the innards you first remove the door. Then you can pop off the front6b47d0c.jpg Then you can remove the shroud and the drum. Give it a good clean and check for broken components. Spec and ohms readings an a bunch of more purty pictures can be found in this printable manual I loaded onto google docs for you:

Dryer will not run but there is power to the unit

Number 11 is my primary suspect. Look for lint in the ductwork. Air restrictions can cause this puppy to melt when temps exceed 300f. To access the innards you remove the door first and then the goalpost front. That exposes the hooks which hold down the top. Once you get them out the way you remove the front shroud and then the drum. Give it a good clean and check all components for continuity.
