Take no more pics until you've recovered your photos, take the card out of the camera. This is to reduce the chance of you overwriting some of your "lost" photos. There are many good freeware photo recovery software options that may help you recover your photos. This article reviews and outlines several of the better ones. If you don't own one already, you will need to purchase an inexpensive USB SDHC card reader to use with this software. Here are some examples from Amazon, or go down to your local WMart, and pick one up.
And here's a video review of the software (they're all free and very good):

did all my pictures get deleted when i press the word fomatted while i was in the menu? Is there anyway to get all my pictures back?

I have had success with this photo recovery program... Download the program from

You have to use a card reader either on your computer or an external USB card reader. Put the card in the card reader, open the recovery program, then select the drive where files are deleted, then press "Start" and wait for it to do it's magic.

All the download links listed in the article are through CNET, primarily to verify that these are malware free software, and to give you a chance to read user reviews on the software before downloading.

My Canon powershot A580 will not download pics to the computer just says there is an error could it be in a weong mode? Thanks frustrated!

Believe you should first put it in picture review mode. It's very hard to troubleshoot software problems online, and it likely is a software issue. But why put up with the headaches of bad software in the first place? Please see the following blog article, as it describes the use of a card reader as a much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos. In fact there are several important reasons discussed in the article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue:
