Tip & How-To about Vacuums

Cordless Shark Vacuum Brush Bar Stops Working

My cordless Shark Vacuum brush bar would stop working each time after a few minutes of use. I was getting ready to throw the vacuum cleaner away, but decided to pull the bottom cover and check it first. I did the following modification and now it works great!

Just a few notes before attempting this tip: You need to be carefulafter this modification if you see the brush bar stop as this couldmean the bar is really jammed and there is a risk of the brush barmotor burning out. Most of the time disabling any fuse or circuit breaker is a very bad idea and could ruin equipment and even cause a fire. In the case of this tip, only consider the modification if you areready to get rid of the Shark because of the brush bar problem. Another option is to replace the circuit breaker, however consideringthe time and money involved vs. the cost of the vacuum cleaner it mayor may not be worth it to you. I did this modification to my cordlessShark about 4 months ago, and have had no further problems with it. I takes about 15 minutes to do this modification using a screw driver and wire cutters.

1. With the vacuum cleaner off, check the brush bar by manually rotating is with you hand. It should not be jammed or very difficult to turn. If so, remove the brush bar and clean it. Try the vacuum again. If you still have a problem with the brush bar stopping, proceed to next step.
2. Remove bottom cover around brush bar / motor.
3. There are two wires going to the brush bar motor, one wire includes a small circuit breaker.
4. Clip the circuit breaker out of the wire and reconnect the wire straight to the motor.
5. Re-install bottom cover.

Hello, this is Ava with Think Crucial.

There are a number of reasons why your brush roller has stopped moving. General maintenance to your vacuum is crucial and will help it work at peak performance.

First things first lets focus on the brush roller. Unplug the vacuum and turn it on its side. Look for any noticeable clumps of debris or hair strands that may be caught in the brush roller. Remove these obstructions, probably best to do so with a scissor if it's hair or long pieces of carpet fibers. After removing the debris try manually rotating the brush roller to uncover other hidden clogs. Another thing to take note of is the condition of the bristles on the roll itself. Are they loose or worn down? These are signs that your brush roller is in need of replacing.

While checking out your brush roll you might as well take a look at your vacuums belt. Your belt should be replaced about every three months. After regular usage, the belt will stretch out, lessening the tension on the brush roller. Lesser tension diminishes the brush roller's turn rate and speed. If the belt feels loose then it certainly is effecting your vacuums suction as well as your brush roll not moving at all.

The brush roll works for a second than red light goes on and it stops. No obstructions to stop the rotation

First make sure that there is no threads wrapped around the roller brush at each end. Next place a couple drops of motor oil in the crack at each end of the roller brush to lubricate the bearings. Do not over oil or you will get oil on your carpet. Now try starting the vacuum on the kitchen floor.. If it still shuts off, then the motor windings are shorted out, meaning the motor is defective and needs replaced. If the vacuum cleaner costs about $ 100.00 , you would be better off buying a brand new vacuum cleaner, rather than replacing the motor.

The brush roller has stopped spinning and all the hair has been removed, how do I fix it?

Hey this is Jim with Crucial Vacuum,

If there's no noticeable debris on the brush roll try manually rotating it to help unearth any hidden clogs behind it. Take note of the condition of the bristles while you're doing this. If they look worn down, or loose then its time to replace your brush roll.

Check your vacuums belt as well. Overtime your belt will stretch and loose resistance. This could lead to the brush roll no longer turning. Be sure your belt is on nice and tight to ensure optimal performance. Your belt should be changed every 3 to 6 months depending on usage.

Hey Kathy this is Jim with Crucial Vacuum,

Chances are if you've cleaned out all of the debris by your Sharks brushroll and its still not spinning that means there's an issue with your belt.

On average you should change your belt every 3 months. After a while the belt will loose tension and stretch and in most cases the brush roll will stop spinning completely.

I need a DIY solution because my shark navigator lift away beater bar attachment stops working intermittently

If you've gotten 4 years out of a Shark you've already beat the system. Give yourself a pat on the back, throw it in the nearest dumpster, then go to your local vac shop and purchase a quality USA made vacuum cleaner that is repairable and will likely last 20-30 years. Chinese vacs are designed to last one year and parts are not made for Sharks.
