Tip & How-To about Video Game Consoles & Games

First Choice on doing anything on the Wii

The most important thing right away after you install homebrew is to install bootmii or preloader, as they both protect your wii from getting bricked.

if you are trying to install any ios or cios or even themes , its pure suicide to do it without both programs as those installations will eventually brick your wii.

these are the advantages of preloader and bootmii , (prefered choice is bootmii).

1-Boot mii: BootMii is a piece of software that can be installed as an IOS or inserted into the boot process. As an IOS, it provides a fast way to back up your Wii's internal NAND flash memory, and will eventually form the basis of a new generation of homebrew applications for the Wii. Inserted into the boot process, BootMii provides you with a "safety net" -- you can back up your entire Wii to SD in under three minutes! If you were to brick your Wii, BootMii would still run and let you restore your backup from SD, quickly and painlessly. BootMii also allows you to directly boot The Homebrew Channel or other homebrew from SD, bypassing the "warning screen" and the rest of the menu.

2-Preloader: Preloader is a small application which places itself before the System Menu. Its main feature is to directly boot the Homebrew Channel or a file you can install from a FAT device. Preloader is also able to apply memory patches the system menu to remove limitations or other things. Since Preloader places itself before the System Menu any problems that would cause the System Menu to fail are not causing your whole Wii to stop working.
If autoboot is enabled and you want to access Preloader's menu simply hold RESET while powering the Wii on

also

Preloader offers hacks as: install additional System Menu patches, simply copy the "hacks.ini" file included with preloader into the root of your SD card. (Ensure you are using the correct hacks.ini for your Wii's region.) Then, boot into Preloader's settings, and chose to enable or disable the patches in the Hack Settings menu.
Once applied, your patches are placed in NAND, so feel free to erase the file on your SD card.
The format for adding additional hacks, or patches, to your hacks.ini file is simple and should explain itself.

I guess you'll updating System menu to 4.2?By updating to system menu 4.2 you have killed homebrew on your wii... FOR NOW. Most worryingly you no longer have a safe way to fix a brick as bootmii and preloader have been pwnd!

There will likely be a fix/workaround out in the next month or 2 but untill then, Nintendo own your ***.

4.2 Affects:

Bannerbomb - Doesn't work. Use Indiana Pwns or Comex's SmashStack beta.
BootMii - BootMii will cease to exist. Wait for an update to the HackMii Installer.
Homebrew Channel - It is uninstalled with this update. See above.
cIOS - Popular piracy cIOS locations are stubs. Don't pirate.
Preloader 0.29 - Not loaded any more due to IOS70 being used as the System Menu. Wait for an update.

Deletes most homebrew.
Now uses IOS70. (No Preloader due to that)
Wii Shop Channel updated. Use WiiSCU to update the shop channel.
Most of the IOS's have been updated or stubbed.
Updates your boot2 to boot2v4 (what LU64+'s have). (That means no downgrading of any IOS, and due to that, you can't revert back to your old System Menu. So BootMii as boot2 installed is removed.)

wii sofmod semi bricked

To fix a semi brick or a full bricked Wii, you will need a backup of your Wii's NAND. Hopefully you made a backup of your Wii's NAND using BootMii.

wii - installed a .wad now get black screen

I hate to scare you but that's not good. You might have bricked your Wii by installed a bad .WAD -- installing a bad WAD will most definitely brick your Wii. Hopefully you did a backup using BootMii before you did that and backed up your Wii's NAND. Thats the ONLY way you can restore your brick Wii from bad .WAD installs. Here's a few great guides that might help you unbrick your Wii.. good luck!

Black Screen Wii

Nintendo support or repairer would be your best hope, as it does sound like a low level brick.
