Tip & How-To about Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate Edition

The not-so-secret Vista SP1 download link is...

... here. You can stop Googling for it now. ;)

Msoft seems to be of two minds about letting Vista SP1 get out there-- it wants to do it but not too fast. So they have kept this URL fairly unadvertised. I found it here on the official Windows Vista Blog.

Read the caveats and "Before you install" notes. This is a big update and proceed with caution and AYOR (At Your Own Risk). Advise strongly backing up your entire hard drive (the one with the O/S on it, usually the C:\ drive) before installing. SP1 installer will make a restore point for you but better safe than sorry-- back up your system drive to a different volume, too (ie don't back it up the same drive it's on-- what if that drive crashes?).

Good luck.

I am trying to install SP1 on Window vista but error 0x80070490 keeps coming up and not letting me install the service pack.

Hi mattnmassey,

This is one of SEVERAL notorious problems brought to you by the eternal headache that is known as Windows Vista. This is a complicated problem, one without a definitive solution, because there are multiple reasons why it happens.

Do you have Vista 32-bit, or Vista 64bit? Post that information here, and once I know which version of the OS you're using, I'll be able to advise you further.

The BAD news is, there is NO simple "one-click " solution to this. You'll have to download and install a 70+ MB patch file as a FIRST step, but I need to know if you have Vista 32 or Vista 64 before we can even begin this process.

I went through this process in May of 2010 when upgrading a Vista system for a client; in all the years I've repaired PCs, this fix was a nightmare. Fixing this problem can take HOURS, with no promise of actually getting SP1 to install. MANY people choose to wipe the HDD and do a clean install of Vista simply because they don't want to spend the time it takes to get this done. I've been repairing PCs since 1993; I cut my teeth on PC-DOS, and to be honest, I GREATLY prefer Linux over ANY Microsoft operating system, but I'm willing to give this a shot if you are.

Keep in mind that it is very possible that NOTHING we do will fix this problem; sometimes you simply have to start with a clean slate in order to get Vista SP1 and SP2 installed, but I do hope you'll make the effort to install the System Update Readiness Tool BEFORE you make a decision about wiping the hard drive.

Tell us which version of Vista you have (32- or 64-bit), and we'll work from there.

Go to Compaq site, and check if there are drivers for win xp. Mind that xp does not include drivers for the most recent hardware. Have you tried installing sp2 and sp3? These carry more recent drivers than SP1 and older vesions. And if there are no drivers for xp, you are stuck with vista.

See this link. Microsoft acknowledges that Vista may keep some scanners from working (especially since, in your case, the printer is working). They have made a hotfix available for this issue, but based on the dates, I'm pretty sure this hotfix was incorporated into Service Pack 1. If you don't have SP1, you may want to try downloading and installing it.
