Tip & How-To about Televison & Video
LCD and plasma screens have a anti-glare coating or anti-reflective coating. This is so any bright light doesn't reflect and wash out the picture. It does help but it also makes cleaning the screen a bit of a problem.
As this is a coating on glass it is actually possible to clean t off by using the wrong cleaner. There are great glass cleaners out there but most are chemically based and too aggressive. In other words they attack the coating.
So what do you use? Paper towels, a drop of dish washing or liquid soap and water. And you need to use a bit of a technique or you will see smears or smudges on the screen.
You need to get two sheets of paper towels. One is your dry wipe. Wet one with water. Then add a drop of liquid soap or detergent. Give it a couple of gentle squeezes to distribute the soap. Then give it a bit harder one to get rid of excess water. Depending on the coating you may want a second piece that has only water and just damp not wet.
Now we clean the screen. First take the soapy towel and wipe down the screen getting it wet. You don't want running water just enough to wet the screen. If you have the soap right you will just see the odd bubble. Once you have the screen wet, wait about 30 seconds and now scrub it using the soapy towel with a circular motion. If there is anything on the screen it should come off. If something is stubborn just keep scrubbing it or use a fingernail to scratch it off and wipe with the soapy after.
Now we need to get the soap off. If the screen dries and has streaks you may need to use the wet un-soaped towel to wipe/rinse of the soap before drying. To dry the screen we want to use the dry towel and use large circular motions. Go over it once and turn it over so the dry side is being used. Keep using those big round motions and at the same time ease up of how hard you push the towel. The idea is to have little pressure on the towel as you finish. That's the trick to getting it streak free.
This takes a minute to do but lets you safely clean your display without damaging the coatings. It also works on any glass surface.
