Resolution Create a New User Account When troubleshooting a variety of issues, it can be useful to determine if the issue affects a specific Windows user account or all accounts. Follow the steps below to create a new user account in Windows Vista or Windows 7:
  1. From the Start menu, choose Control Panel.
  2. Open Add or remove user accounts (If using the Classic View in Windows Vista, open User Accounts. Then open Manage another account).
  3. Select Create a new account and follow the instructions to complete the account setup process.
  4. Once the new account is created, choose Log Off from the Start menu.
  5. Log into the newly created user account.
  6. Open iTunes and determine whether the issue you were experiencing persists in this new user.
If you see the same issue in the newly created user account, proceed to the System-wide troubleshooting section below. If you do not experience the same issue, consult the User-specific troubleshooting section below.
User-specific troubleshooting If your issue only happens in one particular user account, some of the suggestions below may resolve the issue. Before proceeding however, you'll need to make hidden files and folder visible in Windows. Follow steps 1-5 in iTunes for Windows in Windows Vista doesn't open after upgrading.
  • Remove iTunes Plug-ins
    Third-party iTunes plug-ins can cause many issues, particularly if the plug-in has not been updated to be compatible with new versions of iTunes. iTunes plug-ins are stored in the following location:
    C:UsersusernameAppDataRoamingApple ComputeriTunesiTunes Plug-ins
  • Remove iTunes Preference files
    Some of the files that iTunes uses to store settings and preferences may be unusable and cause issues. iTunes has two folders where preferences are saved. Move one of them to the desktop and test to see if the issue persists. If it does, move it back and remove the second folder. The location for the two preference folders are:
    • C:UsersusernameAppDataLocalApple ComputeriTunes
    • C:UsersusernameAppDataRoamingApple ComputeriTunes
  • Create a new iTunes Library
    1. Hold the Shift key while opening iTunes. You will be prompted to Choose iTunes Library.
    2. Choose Create Library to create a new one. In the following window you will be prompted to select a location to save the new iTunes Library.
    3. Click Save. iTunes will open the newly created library. After closing iTunes, you can always select the original library by using the Shift key when opening iTunes.
  • Recreate your iTunes Library
    If you iTunes library has become unusable, rebuilding it as described in How to recreate your iTunes Library and Playlists may resolve the issue.
Check for content files with issues
Sometimes a certain audio file can cause iTunes to quit unexpectedly or stop responding when it is analyzing gapless playback information. To determine which file(s) may be cause the issue follow the steps below:
  1. Quit iTunes.
  2. Navigate to the iTunes folder:
    • Windows Vista - C:usersusernameMusiciTunes
    • Windows 7 - C:usersusernameMy MusiciTunes
  3. Move the iTunes Library.itl file to your desktop
  4. Open iTunes. You should not see any content in iTunes.
  5. From the File menu, choose Add Folder to Library.
  6. Navigate to the folder where your music is located. Typically this is
    • Windows Vista - C:usersusernameMusiciTunesiTunes Media
    • Windows 7 - C:usersusernameMy MusiciTunesiTunes Media
  7. Note: This folder may be called iTunes Music if it was created with iTunes 8 or earlier.

  8. Choose an artist, album, or single song to add the to the library
  9. Wait for iTunes to successfully add the songs to your library and perform the gapless playback scan.
  10. If successful, continue adding back more songs to your library.
  11. If there is an issue with one of your files, you will notice your issue reappear after you attempt to add it to the library. At this point you should repeat these steps being careful not to add the files that cause the issue to occur.
System-wide troubleshooting When troubleshooting system-wide issues with iTunes, there are a few different suggestion to try.
  • Check for viruses
    Windows viruses can interfere with a variety of computer functions including iTunes. Make sure that you have current anti-virus software installed with updated virus definitions and use it to scan your system.
  • Check for anti-virus and/or Internet security software
    Internet Security software itself can sometimes cause iTunes to quit unexpectedly. Try disabling the Internet Security software temporarily or exempting iTunes from any active scanning done by such software. If this resolves the issue, check with the maker of the software for an update to the software or its virus definitions.   • Conflicting processes

You can resolve the restore issues using the troubleshooting steps found in this document:

1. Update to the latest version of iTunes

To see if you have the latest version of iTunes, open iTunes and check for updates.
  • Windows: Choose Help > Check for Updates
  • Mac: Choose iTunes > Check for Updates
If there is an update to iTunes available, install the update and try to restore again. If you do not have an active connection to the Internet, or your Internet security settings are configured to prevent iTunes from communicating with Apple, iTunes will alert you that the iTunes update server could not be contacted. Resolve your Internet issues and attempt to update again.

2. Restart your computer
Simply restarting the computer can clear up certain issues that could prevent you from restoring iPhone or iPod touch. After you restart, try restoring the device again in iTunes.

3. Open the proper ports and allow access to Apple servers
During the update and restore process, iTunes needs to contact Apple. Ensure that your computer has the following ports open and can access these servers:
Port 80
Port 443
phobos.apple.com, albert.apple.com, gs.apple.com
If you see "Error 9807", you must open access to the following VeriSign servers:
evintl-ocsp.verisign.com
evsecure-ocsp.verisign.com
If you are using a Windows operating system, you can follow this article to help resolve issues caused by third-party security software.
You may need to update, properly configure, disable, or uninstall built-in firewalls and other security software to prevent interference with iTunes. For assistance with this, contact the company that supports the firewall or security software you use. If you are using proxy settings, try to restore or update without using a proxy.
4. USB Troubleshooting
Connect iPhone or iPod touch to a different USB port on your Mac or Windows PC. USB 2.0 ports that are built in to the computer are preferred over a hub. If you tried connecting iPhone or iPod touch to USB ports on the front of the computer, try connecting them to rear USB ports. After doing this, try to restore the device in iTunes.
If the issue continues:
Remove all USB devices except the keyboard, mouse, and iPhone or iPod touch. Remove all USB hubs and connect directly to the computer.
Connect iPhone or iPod touch directly to the included USB cable, bypassing the dock.
Restart the computer.
Try to restore the device again in iTunes.
If available, test with alternative, known-good USB cables.

5. Restore on a different computer
If the issue is not resolved with the above steps, try to restore using a different computer. Ensure that the computer you use has USB 2.0 ports, the latest version of iTunes, and that you connect directly to the computer.
If another computer is not available, proceed to the Advanced Steps below.

This article discusses seven methods for resolving the problem. The first method is designed for beginning to intermediate computer users. The other six methods are designed for advanced computer users.

CAUSE
This issue might occur if a system thread generates an exception that the error handler does not catch. Method 1: Make sure that you have sufficient hard disk space loadTOCNode(3, 'resolution');First, make sure that you have sufficient hard disk space. The Stop error can be caused by insufficient hard disk space.

Method 3: Disable or update device drivers loadTOCNode(3, 'resolution');If you have updated the BIOS successfully and the problem persists, the video adapter drivers on the computer might have to be updated or disabled. Follow these steps to troubleshoot the video adapter drivers: 1. If a driver is listed by name in the Stop error message, disable or remove that driver. • If the error occurs during the startup sequence and the system partition uses the NTFS file system, you might be able to use safe mode to rename or to delete the faulty driver. • If the driver is used as part of the system startup process in safe mode, you must use the Recovery Console to start the computer. 2. If the Stop error message does not indicate a specific driver, update the video adapter drivers to the latest versions. 3. Disable or remove any drivers or services that you recently added. 4. Check the Microsoft Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) to determine whether the PCI devices in the computer are compatible with Windows XP. Method 4: Remove unsigned driversIf you have updated the video adapter drivers and the problem persists, or if you cannot start Windows in safe mode, the problem might be caused by a different, unsigned driver. Method 5: Remove all third-party drivers loadTOCNode(3, 'resolution');You might be unable to determine which third-party driver causes the error. If removing unsigned drivers does not resolve the issue, try moving all third-party driver files from the %Windir%\System32\Drivers folder to a different location. Follow these steps to move the third-party driver files: 1. Use the Recovery Console to start the computer, or start the computer from a different installation of Windows if you have performed a parallel Windows installation. 2. Create a temporary folder to hold the driver files. For example, you could create c:\DriverTemp. 3. Move all files that do not have a creation date for Windows XP of 8/13/2001 from the %Windir%\System32\Drivers folder into the temporary folder that you created in step 2.

Caution If the computer relies on third-party IDE or SCSI controller drivers for correct operation, you must identify those driver files and then leave them in the %Windir%\System32\Drivers folder. 4. Restart the computer. 5. Continue the Windows Setup program. You can add the driver files back to the computer one at a time to identify the faulty driver.
Method 6: Remove third-party remote control servicesIf you still have the problem after you use the previous methods and the Stop error message contains the Win32k.sys file name instead of a driver file name, the problem might be caused by a third-party remote control program. To remove the service, use the Recovery Console to start the computer and then delete the third-party remote control service file.
