Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

How to tell which computer is the best for the money!

This works on windows based computers, laptops, and desktops. The people at most computer store's don't know or don't tell you this tip, because they are sales people trying to make a sell.(1). Vista, and Windows 7 have a feature built in that tells you how well of an experiance you should have while operating, based on many different factors.(2). Vista's Windows experiance index is 1.0 to 5.9, Windows 7's Windows experiance index's range is 1.0 to a perfect 7.9, as you see the higher the index the better performance, Ergo experiance you will have with the computer.(3) Left Click on the start globe (microsoft flag), then take curser up to the right and Right Click on Computer, curser down to properties, then Left Click, a screen will pop up and show a Windows Experiance Index.Sometimes you will find 2 computer's that vary by a couple points, and the more expensive one has a lower Score. Just make sure they both are Vista, or both Windows 7. Good luck shoping for that nice performing PC

hp desktop keeps crashing

Agreed not a lot of info, but you may not know what is going on, so s'okay.

There are three main reasons for desktop computer failure;

1) The computer is dirty inside.
Over 80 percent of the personal computers in my shop, suffer from this 'ailment'.

What happens?
The Processor overheats, and turns off. (BIOS turns it off)
This is because there is a fail safe feature built-in. Keeps the Processor from burning up.

The hardware components inside your desktop computer, (i.e., Processor, motherboard chipset, Ram Memory, graphics chipset, {Integrated graphics}, or graphics card, etc.), are cooled by AIR.

When dust, dirt, hair, food crumbs, spider webs, you name it; clog the cooling system for the computer, the temperature inside goes up tremendously. Especially for the Processor.

[ I just cleaned out an old Dell desktop computer, for a store. Worst one I have seen in 14 years. Had 3/4 of an Inch of hair, dust, dirt, and junk, on the bottom of the computer case. The computer case fans were so clogged with 'dust bunnies', I could NOT see them. The Processor fan was one dust ball, and the Heatsink underneath looked like a solid block. Couldn't see the fins.

Q-tips, a soft small brush, and THREE cans of compressed air for computers, later, the computer is working fine again ]

Start with this, then if it does not sure the problem, state back in a Comment.

Unplug the computer from power.

TWO: FOLLOW Anti-Static Precautions.
(Don't know? State in a Comment)

THREE: Post the computer manufacturer NAME, and Model Number. I'll tell you how to open the computer case.

(It's on the back of the computer case, (Tower), next to the Windows product key, OR up on the side of the computer tower.
For an HP, or Compaq computer it is the Product Number.
It is in the white Service Tag, and is P/N )

Why does my computer keep shutting down unexpectedly

One thing it could be is windows update.

Windows update can be frustrating and will download windows components in the background. To complete update windows will shutdown or restart the computer sometimes even without telling you. If this is the case after the shutdown, when you start back up you'll get a notification stating "Windows installed new updates" . You can turn off automatic updates. In Windows 7 go to control panel->Windows update->Change settings and select "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them".
However it may also be that your computer is overheating. I had a Laptop that would overheat when on fabric or even a hard surface. There are two solutions to this; you can buy a laptop cooling pad that plug into a USB port. Or you can clean out the dust. You don't necessarily have to disassemble the computer to do this either, buy some canned air from a retail store that sells it such as Kmart. Then find the vent areas on your computer and used the canned air on the vents. this will blow dust out and cool down components (just don't use it because the air can get icy and so can the can).
Hope this helps! :)

fan is not working

I am glad to HELP YOU!

If your fan doesn't work [you cannot feel the air stream or you cannot hear the soft noise like "fssss" from the inside] I suggest you to get it replaced.
I don't know what kind of computer do you have [laptop or desktop] or what brand and model - but I am pretty sure if you will perform a search on any Internet search engine [like Google or Metacrawler or whatever...] under "XYZ computer cooling fan" you will discover many online shops that are selling it for decent prices.
If you will use your machine with the failed fan you risk to damage irreversible your motherboard and many other components.

My best regards!
